UNDERSTANDING BRAKE TEST REPORTS – MORE THAN PASS OR FAIL

For HGV and PSV operators, a brake test report should never simply be filed because it says PASS.

The real question is:

What is the report actually telling you?

Operators and Transport Managers should look beyond the headline result and consider:

🔹 Overall brake efficiency
🔹 Individual wheel and axle performance
🔹 Brake imbalance
🔹 Wheel lock-ups and warnings
🔹 Laden/unladen test conditions
🔹 Deteriorating or unusual results

Most importantly – do you understand WHY the results have occurred?

This is where my background is particularly relevant.

I originally trained and worked as a qualified commercial vehicle technician and have extensive HGV and PSV experience, including working within truck and PSV main-dealership environments.

When I review a brake test report, I therefore look beyond the percentages. I understand the mechanical principles behind the results and can consider what may be causing poor efficiency, imbalance or abnormal wheel/axle performance.

Brake testing should be a management process:

REVIEW → UNDERSTAND → INVESTIGATE → RECTIFY → RE-TEST → RECORD

This is particularly important following a DVSA investigation, prohibition or Traffic Commissioner scrutiny.
