Servicing a 1980s Scania DS14 engine on a 40m barge in West India Dock.
This Scania has a centrifugal oil spinner that polishes the oil as the engine runs.
I had to clean a lot of muck (carbon) out of it!
It's now running sweet.

A nice job at Hallingbury Marina — installing a vintage Lister JP2 engine into a trad-style narrowboat.
It was a bit of a process:

1️⃣ Mark out the roof ready to cut a whacking great hole to get the engine in
2️⃣ Cut whacking great hole in the roof
3️⃣ Disconnect and remove the old engine
4️⃣ Discover the existing engine bearers need major adaptation
5️⃣ Cut out, adapt and build up new bearers to fit the Lister (a lot of steelwork and precision measuring involved!)
6️⃣ Telehandler lifts the 1.5-tonne engine into place (fingers crossed it sits right…)
7️⃣ Fits like a dream — within a millimetre!
8️⃣ Drill six 20mm holes through 15mm steel to bolt down the mounts
9️⃣ Connect all the pipework
🔟 Weld the roof back in place

Engine runs sweet! One happy engineer and one happy customer. ⚓️

“Dave has been brilliant helping me change the engine in my narrowboat.
He has done all the fabrication we needed and was very professional and took a lot of care to get it all correct.
I’ll happily recommend him for any work needed on a boat.”

Hi everyone,

I’m selling my much-loved Dutch Sailing Tjalk (built 1898, Length 60ft / 18.5m
Beam 10ft 6ins / 3.2m
Draft 1ft 6ins / 0.5m).

She’s a beautiful old barge with loads of history, and comes with her mast, leeboards, and a full set of sails (stored, condition unknown).

Hull overplated 2020/21

John Deere engine – very low hours

Galley with fridge, microwave + marine cooker

Antique wood/coal burner (needs TLC)
Mikuni Diesel heater
Hot water heater (calorifier)

Bath, shower & electric toilet

Washing machine!

Double bedroom + small double bench bed

Ready to move into with a beautiful mooring on the River Blackwater, Maldon (£300/month)

She’s structurally sound and ready to live aboard straight away, but she is a bit of a project: limited headroom in places, some deck/cabin metalwork needs attention, and generally tatty in spots.

💷 £38,000 ono

I have an interesting job at the moment - an unusual 2-stroke V8 Detroit diesel engine on a 40m dutch barge on West India Dock. The last time I saw this engine was on the Tyne-class lifeboat I used to crew on (a long time ago).

It's not run for while, so it was good to get it going and hear it run smoothly! It has a unique sound when running (not like your usual big diesel) that took me back to those days on the lifeboat.

I'm currently working on a really nice boat in Canary Wharf - a 35m dutch barge from the 1950s. I'm doing some engine checks prior to a service.

And I had someone to take photos of me for once!

I mostly work on the Lee and Stort (Essex and Hertfordshire), but cover some parts of London too.

Just get in touch if you need a friendly marine engineer.

Getting the 2 huge caterpillar D353 engines up and running for the first time in years on super-yacht Absolute Pleasure in Canary Wharf.
Both engines are running nicely now - just the bow thruster, steering and anchor winches to sort out now, then she’ll be under-way!
