Bank of England base rate has jumped to 0.25%, but what does this mean for you?

Well first of all, even though it doesn't seem like a lot, it signals what's to come. This is the first rise in 3 years, and unless we head into another lockdown or similar scenario, it's likely to increase.

This will affect both mortgages and savings. Here are more details from :

'"In practical terms, I’m afraid it is likely mortgage holders stand to lose more than savers gain. For variable rate mortgage holders, the typical £8/month rise per £100,000 of mortgage, will be far from welcome amidst the other huge price rises we’re seeing in energy bills and fuel. So it’s important, especially for those on the standard variable rates (SVR), where lenders have the freedom to increase rates by more than the 0.15% – to see this as a spur to check if you can save by getting a better mortgage deal.
"For savers, we may see some easy access rates rise at the big high street banks, but they’ll still be crap – often less than 0.1%. There is a chance fixed rates may rise a smidge more on the back of the announcement, so there’s no rush to do it (just don’t forget), but if it does happen it’s not likely to be a substantial rise in the short term.'

TAG someone you know that's moving during the holidays, they could need this.

1. The timeline. Timescales can often get oujt of control when moving, so having a detailed plan in advance is crucial. Make sure you're always aware of which stage you're at with estate agents, conveyancers and removal companies.
2. Xmas shop now. To avoid the stress and make sure you don't forget certain gifts, try and get this out of the way early doors. Amazon prime will become your best friend, trust us.
3. Organise, organise, organise. Make sure everything is packed in advanced and if things are dismantled, they can easily be put back together. Make sure Christmas decks don't get pushed too far back into the basement/attic, you're going to be needing those.
4. Prepare for bad weather. Check the weather forecast to make sure you're ready for whatever winter can throw at you, and check in with your removal guys too.
5. Let everyone know you've changed address. From your friends and family so cards and presents don't get lost, to your wifi and energy providers so you don't receive any unnecessary bills over the festive period. Also organise Royal Mail to redirect your post too. Check the link in our bio for all things change of address.
