Transition Loughborough

Transition Loughborough Transition Loughborough are part of a global, community driven movement promoting sustainable and eco-aware living.

We are based in the market town of Loughborough, in the east midlands of England. More here: https://transitionnetwork.org/about/ Transition Loughborough aims to help make the town more sustainable and resilient in the face of climate change and rising fuel costs. We're an open organisation made up of volunteers who run a number of projects themed around Energy, Food & Gardens, Transport, Communit

y Hearts & Minds and Skill Sharing. We’re part of a global movement and whilst the Transition movement shares common basic goals, the actual priorities and means to achieve them are driven purely by the desires of the local population. Join in with our events such as Potato Day, seed swaps, repair cafes or apple pressing. We have a community allotment where folk meet and work on Wednesday evenings. Or come to the pay-as-you-can ‘Utilise Cafe’ at Fearon Hall, a social enterprise partnership diverting edible food that would otherwise head from the supermarkets to landfill, into delicious meals. So if you live in Loughborough and want a say in how the town can respond to the challenges facing all of us we’d love to meet you - please get involved!

The Transition Apple Press was part of a very popular church fete in Sutton Bonnington this afternoon. The weather was kind to us - a light rain started just when we were packing up. The apples from the local community orchard were much riper than in previous years, and the hot summer had left its marks in the garden, but what a lovely venue! The free apple juice was popular too.

It's Heritage Open Days weekend on the 19th/20th September in Loughborough and we are involved.

We have traditional apple pressing outside Fearon Hall on the Saturday from 12 til 2pm. Bring clean bottles and apples if you have any and we will magic up fresh, fresh apple juice! 🍏🍏🍏🧃🧃🧃

We have started the ball rolling to apply for funding to run more of the climate literacy workshops we first ran a few years ago. This would mean places would be heavily subsidised and free for those on low wage. Would be good to gauge demand so please do comment if it would be something you'd be interested in.

Thank you to everyone who worked, volunteered or attended our repair cafe today at Fearon Hall.
Another steady one rather than really busy but that did enable those who brought things down to repair to really get up close and understand how their items were being helped to be usable again, as the attached photos attest!
Repair hit rate was good apart from an elderly clock and music box, which will need more specialist tlc.
Next one is Saturday October 31st, spookily. 🫣 👻

Yes, it's your midweek reminder of our next Repair Cafe this Saturday between half 9 and midday or so at Fearon Hall.

We’ll have people who can:
🪡mend holes in clothes and similar🧦
⚙️tinker with sewing machines🛰️
🪛twiddle with household electricals (limited availability so we suggest get there earlier)📟
🔧check over your bike🚲
🪏get your older laptop/'puter running smarter💻
💎sharpen your secateurs/kitchen knives etc.✂️

As usual the process is simple: you bring a broken item or item that needs a sharpen, check it in at our reception/triage desk and then you’ll be assigned to a volunteer repairer who will assess the item, determine if it can be fixed and then hopefully either repair it or give advice (if parts are needed, etc).

Repairs are free and made on a voluntary best effort basis. We gratefully accept donations to help cover the cost of running the event however. There is also a cafe in Fearon Hall where you can get a cuppa and sit down to chat if you have to wait for a repairer to become available. ♻️🧑🏼‍🔧🍰☕
