In my past life as a game designer and creative director, I prided myself on finding real world references to ground the virtual worlds the team would create.

For that reason, visiting Norwick Beach in Unst was special, as it inspired the terrain of Asgard’s Wrath, a fantasy game I worked on that was inspired by Norse mythology.

This day epitomized why I love travel. To first discover images of Norwick Beach was one joy. To see it realized in a game was another. But, to see it in person, as I turn the page to a new life chapter, brought things full circle.

Reine: Lofoten’s Most Scenic Village ⛰️

Reine is a picturesque fishing village in the Lofoten Islands of Norway. Spread across several islands with the stunning Reinefjord as its backdrop, it’s one of Norway’s most photographed villages.

Many of the traditional red and white fisherman’s cottages (rorbuer) have been converted into guesthouses.

Flowers bloom thanks to the long summer days.

The village is dotted with wooden frames used for cod and stockfish (dried fish), which have been regional specialties for centuries.

If you complete the Reinebringen hike, you can purchase a certificate of achievement at the village’s museum. Otherwise, the panoramic view from the top is your prize. While I didn’t tackle the nearly 2,000 stair climb to the Reinebringen vista point, I walked around town and was able to take in various scenic views — a little closer to terra firma 😉

Lofoten is an outdoor lover’s paradise. Hiking, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, fishing, and other outdoor activities abound, especially with long summer days.

A place so unreal it’s straight out of a fairy tale ✨

TROLLFJORD: Norway’s Narrowest Fjord 🇳🇴

With an entrance only 300 feet wide and towering cliffs on either side, the only way to here is by boat.

While larger cruise ships are too big to enter, the National Geographic Resolution navigates the narrow fjord with ease.

Onboard, naturalists discussed the natural phenomena that created these majestic fjords.

Meanwhile, a cultural specialist told the legend of an axe-wielding troll who carved the fjords in anger.
