MALLORCA.

The Balearic island of Mallorca is more often associated with sun, beach, and hedonism. But just a short drive from the capital, La Palma is the rather fabulous Dry Stone route: 140 km and 9 stages up and down the Tramuntana mountain range. And the beautiful town of Valldemossa is right at the centre of it.

This 75 km long distance trail links a number of remote villages in a sparsely populated region on the Greek mainland. Still very much off the tourist radar, the 5 day hike offers a chanxe to get away from it all amidst superb scenery. Highly recommended

Along the top of Scotland. One of my most memorable road trips ever. Get there in the Spring before the crowds and midgets do.

Most visitors to the 'Island of Eternal Spring' tend to cluster around the resorts of the south coast. Sunnier for sure, but also often rather crowded. For a change of scenery head north to the villages of Seixal, Sao Vicente, or Porto da Cruz.

You might not have come across that one. Sun, sea, beaches and Europe's largest desert on your doorstep. 51 km, 4 days through a magnificent landscape. Doesnt get much better than this.

Madeira.

Most visitors to this volcanic island tend to focus on the sunny south side. Indeed, that's where most of the hotels and tourist facilities are. For a more serene, quiet, and authentic experience, head towards the northern shore. Less sun for sure, but also fewer crowds.

This used to be a forgotten corner of Europe. Not any more. But away from construction projects and intense tourist developments, there are still pockets of tranquility and serenity. Kantara Castle in the Kyrenua Mountains is one of them.
