39 roadside facility operators across England have been awarded a share of £8 million from the Department for Transport and a further £11 million from industry to significantly upgrade truck stops for lorry drivers.

Commercial drivers are being ignored when it comes to their right to use proper hygiene and rest facilities while working, according to Logistics UK.

A survey conducted for DfT highlighted that overnight parking demand for commercial vehicle spaces is consistently above what is deemed to be ‘critical capacity’, with the number of vehicles requiring safe and secure overnight parking exceeding capacity for 11 out of 12 months.

Moreton Cullimore, chair of the Road Haulage Association (RHA), handed in a petition to Downing Street on Tuesday, urging ministers to help improve roadside facilities.

Thefts from HGVs are rising and cost the industry more than £400m a year.

Mr Cullimore said: "Most of us would not work in offices if they didn't have proper toilets, welfare facilities and a kitchen to make lunch in."

A petition was handed into Downing Street calling for more safe and secure parking for drivers.

The Government has launched a new £7 million tech fund to help small to medium-sized businesses develop greener and more efficient solutions for freight.

The freight innovation fund (FIF) will go to up to 36 SMEs. They will then work with industry-leading companies to develop innovations to make freight more efficient, resilient and greener, such as ways to improve how freight moves between rail, road and maritime transport.

Lorry drivers will benefit from improved and safer rest areas and roadside facilities thanks to up to £100 million investment from industry and government, the Roads Minister Richard Holden has announced today.

From today, truck-stop and road service operators can bid for a share of the £32.5 million match-funding pot from the government. This is in addition to the £20 million match-funding launched earlier this year from National Highways to improve roadside facilities and security for lorry drivers.

The move is part of the government’s 33 actions to address the shortage of HGV drivers and boost recruitment and retention.

HGV parking and driver welfare scheme provides match funding to support industry operators to improve HGV facilities.
