A recent article from Packaging News highlights growing concern within the UK glass industry around rising environmental levies, energy costs and the impact these pressures could have on manufacturing and investment.

For the w**e industry, it raises a wider question about packaging choice.

Sustainability cannot be considered in isolation from cost, energy use, transport, supply chains and the infrastructure needed to recover materials after use.

This is one reason alternative formats are becoming increasingly relevant. Lightweight rPET solutions, such as our Eco Flat Bottles, offer w**e producers another option, reducing packaging weight and improving transport efficiency while using a material that can contain recycled content and be recycled again.

As environmental regulation evolves, having more viable packaging choices could become increasingly important for producers.

A huge congratulations to our partners in South Africa, Polyoak Packaging, SAFRIPOL and Stellenbosch Vineyards, on winning the 2026 SAPRO Gold Award for Best Innovation for the Eco Flat W**e Bottle. ๐Ÿ†๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ

Awards like this one belong to partnerships. Our eco-flat design only becomes a bottle on a shelf when local expertise takes it on: Safripol supplying the recycled PET, Polyoak moulding it in Cape Town, and Stellenbosch Vineyards filling it with South African w**e.

That is the model we believe in. Design once, then work with the best local partners to produce recycled, lightweight, space-efficient w**e bottles close to where the w**e is made and enjoyed.

Recognition from SAPRO, the body that champions plastics recycling in South Africa, means a great deal.

Congratulations to everyone involved. A brilliant achievement for the whole South African team.

How do businesses turn sustainability from an ambition into something that works commercially in practice?

On Weds 2nd September, Santiago will be joining a panel at Barclays HQ in London for The Future of Sustainable Business, hosted by Barclays UK and The L Factor.

The discussion will explore how organisations can embed sustainability into strategy and decision making, balance environmental and social impact with commercial performance, and build businesses equipped for long term growth.

Thank you to Lenna Lou, Justine Lou, The L Factor and Barclays for inviting Santiago to contribute.

If you're interested in sustainability, leadership and what meaningful action looks like in the real world, we'd love to see you there.

Burgundy has recorded its earliest w**e harvest in almost 500 years.

According to W**e Searcher, picking began in Montrachet on 13th August, breaking a record dating back to 1556. Repeated heatwaves throughout the 2026 growing season have accelerated ripening across the region.

Research into Burgundy harvests stretching back to 1354 also found that between 1988 and 2018, picking began an average of 13 days earlier than the historic norm.

As climate scientist Thomas Labbรฉ puts it, "the exceptional has become the norm."

At Packamama, we think this raises a wider question for the w**e industry. Climate change isnโ€™t just something happening in the vineyard; it also challenges us to rethink how we package and move w**e.

Every decision matters: choosing lighter packaging, improving space efficiency and reducing the transport footprint of the bottle can all contribute to lowering emissions across the supply chain.

Thatโ€™s one of the reasons we developed the Eco-flat bottle at Packamama: to rethink not only what a w**e bottle is made from, but also how efficiently it can be transported and delivered.

Did you know? Burgundy also has a connection close to us at Packamama. The W**e Society's bestselling White Burgundy 2024 is available in an rPET Eco Flat bottle, part of its work to explore more sustainable packaging and reduce its carbon footprint.

A recent study from the University of Arkansas, published in the journal 'Cleaner and Responsible Consumption', found that consumer perceptions of alternative w**e packaging changed when people were given information about carbon footprint and recyclability.

The research suggests that education can play a significant role in helping consumers understand the environmental impact of different packaging formats, rather than relying on long held assumptions.

It also found that younger consumers are increasingly open to alternative packaging, signalling a shift in expectations as sustainability becomes a bigger part of purchasing decisions.

For the w**e industry, that's an important insight.

Innovation isn't just about developing new packaging. It's also about helping consumers understand why different formats exist, where they work best, and how they can contribute to a lower carbon future.

As the industry evolves, informed choices will be just as important as innovative solutions.

A recent article from Label & Narrow Web explores how attitudes towards w**e packaging are evolving.

One of the key takeaways is that consumers are increasingly considering the environmental impact of packaging alongside the w**e itself. Lightweight, recyclable formats are becoming part of the conversation, particularly among younger and more environmentally conscious consumers.

It's another reminder that packaging is no longer just about protecting the product. It also influences transport efficiency, recyclability and how materials are kept in circulation.

For the w**e industry, the challenge isn't choosing one format over another. It's understanding which packaging solutions are best suited to different w**es, occasions and supply chains.

As innovation continues, the conversation is shifting from "What's the best bottle?" to "What's the best bottle for this application?"

Innovation in the w**e industry doesn't stop at the vineyard. Sometimes, it even reaches space.

Researchers at Texas A&M University AgriLife are sending grape seeds to the International Space Station, where they'll spend six months exposed to cosmic radiation before returning to Earth for planting and study. The research aims to better understand plant resilience, genetics and how future grape varieties might adapt to changing environmental conditions.

The project could even result in the first w**e made from grapes grown from seeds that have travelled to space.

While the idea certainly captures the imagination, the science behind it is what matters most. Understanding how vines respond to extreme conditions could help develop stronger, more resilient grape varieties for the future.

At Packamama, we're always inspired by innovation that challenges convention. Whether it's advancing viticulture, improving sustainability or rethinking packaging, progress comes from asking bold questions and exploring new possibilities.

The future of w**e will be shaped by those willing to think differently, from the vineyard to the bottle.

When people talk about sustainable packaging, it's easy to assume all plastics perform the same. They don't.

A recent study published by Frontiers highlights an important difference between rigid plastic packaging, such as rPET bottles, and flexible packaging, such as pouches. The research found that rigid plastics are much better suited to today's collection and recycling systems, making them easier and more economical to keep in a circular economy.

Rigid rPET bottles are designed to be collected, recycled and turned back into new products. Flexible pouches are often much harder to recover and recycle because of the way they're made and the infrastructure they require.

At Packamama, we believe the future of w**e packaging starts with better questions:

โœ”๏ธ Can it be collected?
โœ”๏ธ Can it be recycled?
โœ”๏ธ Was it designed for circularity from the start?

Building a circular economy isn't just about choosing a different material. It's about choosing packaging that's designed to stay in the system for as long as possible.
