I used to dip our little bronze sculptures into a patina bath, but over time I found that brushing the solution over warmed metal allows it to evolve more evenly. It lets the darker tones build in layers, deepening until it settles into something more alive.

What’s happening is simple, but beautiful to watch. The copper in the bronze reacts with the acidic patina solution which contains selenium, lightly etching the surface and transforming it into copper selenide—the darkened metal you see forming as the brush passes over it.

A small chemical reaction, but it feels like watching a flower bloom in time lapse.
