In honour of World Bee Day last month, we dedicated this offering to our incredible pollinators to spread awareness and support efforts aiding in their survival.

The greatest contribution of bees and other pollinators is the pollination of nearly three quarters of the plants that produce 90% of the world’s food. A third of the world’s food production depends on bees, i.e. every third spoonful of food depends on pollination.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In Europe, nearly 10% of bees are facing extinction, and around 5% of them are probably endangered, while no data is available for nearly 57% of species. Bee losses amounted to 33% in 2017 in the US alone.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Bees are vital for the preservation of ecological balance and biodiversity in nature. They protect and maintain ecosystems as well as animal and plant species, and contribute to genetic and biotic diversity. They also act as indicators of the state of the environment. Their presence, absence or quantity tells us when something is happening with the environment and that appropriate action is needed. Let's show our pollinator friends some love 💛

1. £690 million is the mind-boggling amount that insect pollination is worth to UK crops each year. 76% of globally important commercial crops depend on insect pollination, which equates to 1 in 3 mouthfuls of food!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2. The “waggle dance” is used by bees to teach each other about the direction and location of food sources over 6 kilometres away. Known as 'a sat nav for bees', the bees perform precise movements to tell other bees in the hive exactly where they have found their new fantastic food source!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3. Bees have four wings, not two - they actually hook them together to form one big pair when flying and then unhook them when not flying!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
4. There are around 75% more wild bees on organic farms - organic farming can improve the numbers of bees found in habitats surrounding the farm. This is because organic farmers use fewer pesticides, and have a higher amount of bee-friendly habitats, like wildflower margins.

5. The average hive produces about 11kg of honey during a season! That's the equivalent of about 24 jars. Bees must fly about 55,000 miles just to make one pound of honey (which is less than half a kilo!)

6. 20,000 species of bee live around the world, with over 250 species in the UK.

7. Some amazing solitary bee species include leafcutter bees, who construct their homes from thick-stemmed plants, rotted wood and leaves, and masonry bees, which can be found inside naturally-occurring holes in bricks and mortar joints!

8. Bees bounce back! Bees are really responsive to changes in their habitat - for every 10% increase in bee-friendly habitats, like those found on organic farms, bee numbers and diversity increases by over a third!

9. Bee colonies are a hive of activity - One queen, hundreds of male drones and thousands of female workers make up a single average honeybee hive.

Bees indeed make honey, however bees make and store the honey for themselves as that is their only source of food. As you can imagine, it is much needed during the winter months when they cannot forage for wild flowers.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Honey has all of the macronutrients that a bee needs, meaning they can survive solely on it. When honey is extracted from a bee colony's hive, it is replaced with a sugar water substance which lacks the much needed nutrients. Research indicates that this replacement weakens bee’s immunity and makes them more susceptible to diseases. During the process of honey harvesting, bee’s are mutilated or even killed. Once the honeycomb is extracted, a small scale beekeeper will brush off the bees, while in larger scale beekeeping, more efficient yet violent ways to kick them out of the hive are used.

We are thrilled to offer this delicious alternative made entirely from flowers and fruit that masterfully replicates the taste and texture. The founder's grandfather was a beekeeper, and with the changing of the tides sought to continue the love and legacy in a more conscious and environmentally friendly way.

One of our favourite mycologists is among those developing innovative yet practical ways to help the bees.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In 2014, Paul Stamets, Dr. Steve Sheppard (Chair, Department of Entomology, Washington State University) and the Washington State Beekeepers Association teamed up in a research initiative called BeeFriendly™ to help reverse devastating declines in the global bee population that are critically threatening the world’s food security. In 2015, experiments began where honey bees drank different mushroom mycelium extracts. Research is indicating that mushroom mycelium extracts provide essential nutrition that confers an immune benefit to bees. This nutritional support then translates into improved hive health. As a result of our Give Bees a Chance program, Fungi Perfecti has directly contributed over $200,000 to fund bee research, specifically studying how mushroom mycelium extracts can help bees stay healthy.

Through this research, Stamets and Paul Taylor, developed the patent-pending BeeMushroomed Feeder™ - a delivery system for mushroom mycelium extract, making this nutritive food easily available to bees to sustain their natural health in this time of crisis. The BeeMushroomed Feeder is currently in the development phase, and work is underway to address the regulatory context for this innovative mycotechnology.
