Fenghuang, also known as the “City of the Phoenix,” owes its name to a legend telling how two phoenixes, fascinated by the beauty of the place, decided to settle here forever. In Chinese culture, this mythical bird symbolizes good fortune and prosperity.

Located in Hunan Province, on the banks of the Tuojiang River, Fenghuang Ancient Town has preserved its historic charm, with traditional wooden houses that seem frozen in time. Founded over 400 years ago during the Qing Dynasty, it is also home to the Miao and Tujia ethnic minorities, famous for their hand-embroidered costumes, traditional music, and an ancient culture deeply connected to nature.

The “crying marriage” is a centuries-old tradition practiced by the Tujia ethnic minority, particularly in areas around Yichang, Hubei Province, and neighboring Sichuan and Hunan provinces.
Far from a sign of sadness, this ritual is a symbolic performance of gratitude, filial piety, and familial bonds, often lasting from a few days to a full month before the wedding day.

Traditionally, the bride begins crying one hour a day, starting about a month before the wedding. Ten days in, her mother joins, and after another ten days, grandmothers and other female relatives join, turning the ritual into a communal “crying song” performance.
In Tujia culture, the ability to “cry” well is considered a sign of intelligence and virtue. Brides who did not cry were sometimes criticized, while those who cried eloquently with “flowery” and moving words were highly regarded.
Those who are “cried for” (e.g., parents, relatives) often give the bride money, known as “tear money” (哭嫁钱). The ceremony often concludes with the bride placing her “crying cloth” in the dowry chest, which is carried to the groom’s home.
A key part of the traditional ceremony involves the bride cursing or scolding the matchmaker. This is seen as a way to vent frustratio against traditional marital constraints.
