Lynher’s dock dung mosaic project
Lynher is a Tamar sailing barge built in 1896 at Calstock on the upper reaches of the River Tamar. Tamar barges used to transport any type of cargo traded on the Plymouth waterways and beyond. From coal and stone to produce and..dock dung. Also known as town dung or night soil, it was used to fertilise the fields and orchards along the Rivers Tamar and Lynher. The horse dung was mixed with the city’s roads rubbish as it was scraped off the roads and carted down the docks to load on the barges. These remains can be found everywhere along the rivers shores and farmers fields nowadays. Lynher CIC is inviting people to collect them and be inspired by community artist Sally Turner to create a mosaic or donate them to contribute to Sally’s mosaic image of the Lynher barge. Sally will explain the process through tutorials and images, she will provide details of the tools and material she is using and answer your questions.
