UK Train Services For Transport

Britain’s trains have had their least reliable year since records began.

The figures show that 3.6% of planned trains were cancelled or part-cancelled in the 12 months to 23 July, according to analysis of Office of Rail and Road data by PA Media. The news agency said it was the highest proportion in records dating back to 2015.

The disruption includes repeated strikes, severe weather conditions and Covid-related staff absences. Cancellations have surged in recent weeks after strike action over jobs, pay and conditions.

Avanti West Coast cancelled 16.2% of its services in the latest four-week period between 26 June and 23 July. That is the highest figure in any recorded period for the west coast franchise, which runs trains between London, Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow.

Avanti has come under fire for drastically reducing its timetable, with Labour saying it should be stripped of its contract if services are not restored.

Avanti has said it is facing staff shortages caused by drivers engaging in an “unofficial strike”, with a sharp decline in the number who are voluntarily working on their rest days for extra pay.

But the drivers’ union Aslef says this is “disingenuous” and blames the company for failing to employ enough drivers.

Other operators that had their highest cancellation scores on record in the four weeks to 23 July include CrossCountry (10.3%), LNER (7.4%) and Merseyrail (5.5%).

Zero Emission Trucks For Logistics

Clean Logistics has presented its first hydrogen-powered zero-emission truck to the public, in Hamburg. With ‘fyuriant’, Clean Logistics is heralding a new era in the field of environmentally friendly solutions for road freight transport and reaching another important milestone in its corporate history. Last summer, the company handed over the first converted bus with fuel cell hydrogen drive in public transportation in Europe. This is now also possible for heavy semi-trailer tractors of 40 tons.

The trucks boast ground-breaking technology. The first fyuriant is equipped, among other things, with two hydrogen fuel cells with 2×120 kW output and hydrogen tanks with a volume of 43 kg. This ensures a sufficiently high range of over 400 km and short refuelling times of less than 15 minutes. The rear axle, which is equipped with wheel hub motors, has a maximum torque of 17,000 Nm, which provides the truck with the appropriate power in any driving situation. The intelligent control system developed in- house by Clean Logistics enables an efficient control of the overall system in every driving situation. The energy recovered during braking, for instance, is temporarily stored in a battery and made available again for the next acceleration.

International Transport co2 for Air Cargo

Next year, companies in Europe with sales of more than €40 million or 250 employees will have to disclose their carbon footprint annually. This also includes the extent to which their own goods were transported internationally. For this reason, it is important for these companies as well as for the contracted logistics company to be able to document exact values of CO2 emissions. However, these values vary enormously depending on the cargo aircraft. For example, a Boeing 737-400 with 1t of cargo produces a good 10t of CO2, whereas a Boeing 777 produces only 4t on a distance from Frankfurt to San Francisco.

So the choice of aircraft plays a key role in calculating CO2 values for air cargo. And since many airlines are now successively modernizing their fleets, companies now have the opportunity to have their freight shipped with optimized CO2 emissions.

UK Warehouse Shortages

With the high cost of human labour prompting more and more logistics companies to seek ways of working that rely less on people, interest in automation is greater than ever at this year’s IMHX, says Event Director, Rob Fisher.

The shrinking labour pool is certainly hitting the logistics sector hard with HGV drivers, warehouse order pickers and forklift operators all in short supply.

Indeed, it was at a recent event organised by the Institute for Government, that the chief executive of Food and Drink Federation announced that the UK food supply chain is around half a million workers short. This represents some 12.5% of the total workforce required.

Meanwhile, a recent survey conducted by the trade association, Logistics UK, noted 13% of respondents report severe warehouse staff shortages, with a substantial decline in the availability of forklift drivers cited as a major problem.

The worker shortage is forcing many warehouse operators to offer higher wages, and in some cases a signing on fee, in an attempt to attract the personnel needed. In November 2020, a leading online job search-engine reported the average forklift driver’s salary was advertised as £21,972, while warehouse staff positions typically paid £19,995 per annum. By November 2021, the remuneration for both forklift drivers and order pickers were up 8% year-on-year.

DHL pledges €7bn to reduce emissions - Logistic Transport Services Worldwide

Deutsche Post DHL Group (DPDHL), a leading global brand in the logistics industry, has joined ABB’s Energy Efficiency Movement to reinforce its commitment in reducing its carbon footprint. This is an important step in DPDHL’s initiative to lead the logistics industry towards a greener and more sustainable future, with a commitment to invest €7bn by 2030 to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions.

Launched in March 2021 by ABB, the is a multi-stakeholder initiative to raise awareness and initiate action to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions to combat climate change. Companies are invited to join the movement and make a public pledge as a way of inspiring others to take action.

The two companies have also signed a Memorandum of Understanding to support each other in the ex*****on of their own sustainability strategies. DPDHL and ABB will cooperate on projects to reduce ABB’s carbon footprint in its logistics facilities as well as the transportation of goods. The two companies will also work together to help make DPDHL logistics and office facilities more energy efficient, with a primary focus on heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems where high efficiency electric motors and variable speed drives can achieve major reductions in energy use.
