Not a sight often seen around…

PS Waverley is the world’s last sea-going paddle steamer, launched in 1946 to replace the original Waverley that was sunk during the Dunkirk evacuation in 1940. Built for the London and North Eastern Railway, she served for decades on Scotland’s Firth of Clyde, carrying day-trippers between towns and islands. Powered by a triple-expansion steam engine driving two side-mounted paddle wheels, she quickly became a symbol of nostalgic charm and traditional maritime engineering. Her low-slung hull, red-white-black funnel, and open viewing decks made her a favourite for generations of holidaymakers.

By the 1970s she faced retirement, but in 1974 was saved by a public campaign and handed to a preservation trust for just £1. Restored and modernised over time, she now offers summer cruises around Britain—from the Clyde to the Thames and English Channel—while retaining her original steam engine and heritage fittings. Listed in the National Historic Fleet, PS Waverley continues to sail each year, a rare survivor of the paddle steamer era and a living tribute to coastal pleasure cruising in the age of steam
