Hvar Town is the part of the island most associated with yachts, nightlife and busy summer evenings. Stari Grad offers a different base, with centuries of history, a waterfront setting and a more relaxed rhythm.

The hotel sits just metres from a pine-shaded pebble beach and within walking distance of Stari Grad. It is not a completely silent hideaway, though. [PLACES] has a sociable lifestyle atmosphere, with music and activity around the pool and beach areas.

That makes it better suited to couples who want a proper beach holiday with some energy around them, while still having one of Croatia’s most characterful old towns close enough to explore.

If your last holiday left you needing another holiday, this week in Croatia could be more your pace.

I’d approach this one differently. Choose a base by the sea, leave some days open and give yourselves time to settle in.

Admiral Grand sits directly beside the beach in Slano Bay. The useful distinction is the location: this is a coastal stay outside Dubrovnik, with the city an optional day trip rather than the centre of every day. Any sightseeing or excursion would be extra.

Half Board also leaves lunch open, so a day out needn’t revolve around getting back for another included meal.

I’d shortlist this for couples who want most of their week to be about the sea, a book and time together. My advice would be to choose one outing you really want to do, then resist filling the rest of the calendar.

For couples whose evenings usually disappear into work, chores and tomorrow’s to-do list, a week with somewhere lovely to do very little has its appeal.

The private pool is part of the quoted suite, so it’s something you can build your stay around: a swim before heading out, a book afterwards, or an afternoon with no plans at all.

One detail I’d plan around is the journey home. The flight leaves Santorini at 23:20 on 30 June and lands at Gatwick at 01:20 on 1 July. That gives you a late departure, but it doesn’t mean the room is yours until then. Any late checkout would need checking separately.

Breakfast is included; lunch and dinner are extra, leaving you free to choose where to eat each day. I’d put this on the shortlist for an anniversary or a couples’ escape where the suite matters as much as the sightseeing.
