✈️ Gatwick's Northern Runway Project has cleared its final major legal hurdle.

The Court of Appeal has dismissed the latest challenge to Gatwick Airport's £2.2 billion expansion, paving the way for the Northern Runway to become fully operational by 2030.

The project will allow up to 100,000 additional flights each year, expanding capacity at one of the UK's busiest airports. Gatwick, which already serves more than 200 destinations, expects the expansion to improve connectivity, create around 14,000 new jobs, and generate an estimated £1 billion in economic benefits annually.

If construction stays on schedule, passengers could begin using the expanded runway before the end of the decade.

⚠️ Japan Travel Advisory – Following the Major Earthquake

A powerful earthquake has struck Japan's Kyushu region, with Kumamoto Prefecture among the worst affected. Emergency services are responding to damage, power outages, transport disruption and numerous aftershocks. The initial tsunami warning has now been lifted, but authorities continue to warn of the risk from further strong aftershocks.

If you're travelling to Japan:

✈️ Check with your airline before heading to the airport, as some flights may be delayed or cancelled.
🚄 Expect disruption to rail services, including parts of the Kyushu Shinkansen network.
🏨 Follow instructions from your hotel and local authorities, especially if evacuation advice is issued.
📱 Keep your phone fully charged and enable emergency alerts.
🎒 Carry essentials including water, medication, travel documents and a portable power bank.
🌊 Stay away from damaged buildings and coastal areas until officials confirm they are safe.

At present, the UK Foreign Office continues to advise travellers to follow the instructions of local authorities and monitor official updates, as Japan remains prone to earthquakes and aftershocks.

Our thoughts are with everyone affected, and we hope for the safety of residents, visitors and the emergency services working tirelessly in the affected areas.

🇪🇸 Spain Travel Advisory: Wildfires Update

If you're travelling to Spain in the coming days or weeks, it's important to stay informed as severe wildfires continue to affect parts of the country.

Spanish authorities have declared a national emergency in areas including Madrid and Ávila, with additional fires reported across other inland regions. Thousands of residents and visitors have been evacuated, while smoke has impacted air quality in some locations.

✈️ What travellers need to know

- Flights to most major airports, including Madrid and Valencia, are generally continuing to operate, although local disruption remains possible.
- Avoid travelling into wildfire-affected areas and always follow instructions from local emergency services.
- If you are in Spain and need emergency assistance, call 112.
- A further heatwave is forecast this week, increasing the risk of new fires and changing conditions.

Before you travel

✅ Check your airline or tour operator for the latest updates.
✅ Review your travel insurance to understand what is covered if your trip is disrupted by wildfires.
✅ Monitor the latest UK Government travel advice before departure.

While most tourist destinations remain open, conditions can change rapidly. Stay alert, keep up to date with official advice, and be prepared to alter your plans if required.

Stay safe and travel responsibly. 🇪🇸✈️

⚠️ Travelling to Mallorca this week?

If you're flying through Palma Airport, it's worth allowing some extra time.

From today (27 July) until 30 July, planned strike action by metal sector workers could affect airport operations across the Balearic Islands. These workers are responsible for maintaining baggage belts, baggage sorting systems, airside vehicles and boarding bridges, so delays to baggage handling and aircraft turnaround times are possible.

✈️ If you're travelling:
• Arrive at the airport earlier than usual.
• Keep an eye on your airline's app or website for updates.
• Be patient with airport and airline staff, who will be doing their best to minimise disruption.

If you're heading off on holiday, hopefully any delays are short-lived and you still get to enjoy the sunshine. 🌴☀️
