In Peru’s Colca Valley, traditional dress is anything but understated: scarlet polleras, velvet jackets and bodices embroidered with flowers, birds and geometric motifs. The valley’s two historic peoples, the Collagua and Cabana, have their own distinctive styles, most visible in women’s hats and dress.

The making of these intricate textiles is a fine art, still carried out by hand: wool is drawn out between finger and thumb and spun into yarn on a drop spindle, before moving to the loom, where the threads are worked by hand.

Hidden in tropical forest at the quieter northern end of Santa Teresa, Casa Dewa might just be the coolest beach house in town. The six-bedroom villa is built around huge ironwood columns salvaged from the seabed off Indonesia, with a centuries-old Javanese rice barn incorporated into the upper floor. Inside, carved Indian antiques and pieces collected in Bali sit alongside furniture designed by the owner, former model and interior designer Carlota Dörring-Meadows.

There’s a pool and yoga shala, and a path through the garden leads straight onto 150 metres of white-sand beach, with one of the area’s best surf peaks out front. A few minutes away, Santa Teresa has gone from little-known surf outpost to lively beach town, with excellent restaurants, beach bars, boutiques and yoga studios lining the dusty road between jungle and Pacific.

Potosí sits high on Bolivia’s altiplano, beneath the looming outline of Cerro Rico. For centuries, this mountain was one of the richest sources of silver on Earth. Its wealth built palaces, gilded churches and financed an empire; by the end of the 16th century, Potosí was larger and wealthier than London or Madrid.

That old silver economy is still visible in the city today, from its monumental Andean Baroque churches and grand merchants’ houses to the Royal Mint - now a museum - that fills an entire city block. Stay at 𝙷𝚘𝚝𝚎𝚕 𝙼𝚞𝚜𝚎𝚘 𝙲𝚊𝚢𝚊𝚛𝚊 - 𝟷𝟻𝟻𝟽, a hacienda dating to 1557 just outside the city, with frescoed ceilings, a library of goatskin-bound books, muskets, duelling pistols and the 16th century armour of its very first owner.

Christmas in Latin America feels a world away from the northern hemisphere.

It might mean riding in the mountains of Patagonia by day, spending evenings gathered around the barbeque; taking over a beach house on Brazil’s Bahian coast with the whole family; hot summer days in Cartagena’s colourful Old Town; or waking to the sound of howler monkeys in the Costa Rican rainforest.

It might mean riding through the hills of northern Argentina with gauchos by day, gathering around the barbecue in the evening; taking over a beach house on Brazil’s Bahian coast with the whole family; exploring salt flats, geysers and high-altitude lagoons from a desert lodge in the Atacama; or waking to the sound of howler monkeys and toucans in the Costa Rican rainforest.

The scale of Antarctica is difficult to comprehend until you are among it. Covering more than 14 million square kilometres, it is so vast that most expeditions take in only a tiny sliver of the continent. Icebergs the size of small towns rise from the water; humpback whales surface in deserted bays; and penguins, seals and nesting seabirds gather along remote shores in their thousands, largely indifferent to human presence.

Our favourite way to travel is aboard a small expedition ship such as the Magellan Explorer: a short flight from Chile’s Punta Arenas lands on King George Island, avoiding the Drake Passage and beginning the voyage in Antarctic waters. For a different perspective of the continent, White Desert Antarctica flies straight into the Antarctic interior, where explorers stay in small camps on the ice.

Just three hours from Buenos Aires, Estancia La Tomasa is a 2,000-hectare working cattle ranch that has been in the Scottish-Argentine Gibson family for seven generations. Today, it is led by Luisa Gibson and her five daughters - a rarity in Argentina’s traditionally male-dominated ranching world - and has recently opened its doors to guests.

Guests stay in the family home, a carefully restored 1893 farmhouse, and are invited to join in real estancia life. You might spend the morning with the gauchos as they move cattle between paddocks, checking livestock or watching seasonal work such as branding and weaning. Out of the saddle, head to the lagoon for picnics and to spot capybaras and birdlife, or take a tour of the farm and its historic railway.

Breakfasts are a glorious spread of fresh eggs from the farm, homemade jams and bread, all whipped up by eldest daughter and resident chef Sofia. Dinner is served communally around the family table, with asados often shared with the gauchos after a hard day’s work.

The Uros Islands aren’t islands in the usual sense. More than 12,500 feet up in the Peruvian Andes, they float on Lake Titicaca, built by hand from buoyant blocks of totora roots layered with reeds. The Uros people moved onto the lake more than five centuries ago, creating the islands to escape from the expanding Inca Empire; today, around 1,300 people live here, across some 120 islands.

Each island is home to only a few families, anchored in place by eucalyptus poles driven into the lakebed. Between the islands, the Uros travel by boats woven from the same reeds used to build their homes. Every few weeks, fresh reeds are laid as the layers beneath rot.
