Whitstable Labour Councillors

Whitstable Labour Councillors Promoted by Seán Newman on behalf of the Labour Party, both at PO Box 1250, CT5 9EG. The narrow end of Harbour Street is dangerous.

Whitstable's tourism is booming and the current traffic-flow system, designed for Victorian carts & horses, just can't cope. This non-political, community-led group campaigns for a sustainable traffic management system that has safety and posterity in mind; we want to make our town a safer one for everyone and a more pleasant experiences for all our many, welcome, visitors. We firmly believe that

this is not an issue over which councillors can just bury their heads in the sand. It is embarrassing that this issue - discussed for over 45 years - has not been actioned. Whitstable's tourist footfall has increased over 300% in the last five years and our councillors have not acted. Children, dogs and often adults just stray in front of cars because the sheer amount of people on the pavements is too many. The pavements are too narrow for some wheelchairs and prams; when scaffolding is put up (as it often is, to repaint the beautiful, heritage buildings), then prams and wheelchairs are forced on the roads. We - at 1Way4Whit are not content with sitting waiting for an accident to happen before we call for action; we call for action now.

1Way4Whit knows that there are many difficulties with the introduction of a one-way system & whilst we primarily believe for this to be, certainly in the long term, the ultimate goal for the future safety, beauty and charm of the town to be retained, we are open to other suggestions. We believe all obstacles are surmountable; we want to building a Whitstable that our children can be proud.

1Way4Whit calls for a non-partisan investigation to be run into the viability of a strong and sustainable one-way system, which takes into account the impact on Cromwell Road - a viable one-way system will HAVE to address this issue. We also want KCC to act immediately. We also call for immediate action on the mis-use of parking in the High Street & believe that the viability of removing or severely restricting loading bay hours in the High Street should be investigated. We think there could be merits in the idea of a Park and Ride with shuttle bus system - this too deserves further exploration.

1Way4Whit also calls for a public meeting, chaired by an academic or media organisation to let all parties and ideas be exchanged in a fruitful, collaborative and fowards-thinking way. We call on our councillors to listen to this community group and to take on-board the suggestions presented. We call on both Canterbury City Council and Kent County Council to act now.

After a week of water misery here is your top ten:
1. Whilst we aren’t out of the woods yet I’ve had emails about compensation. Residents who lost water should receive £50 compensation for every twelve hour period they were out after the first twelve hours. This will be automatically credited to your bill in the next 20 working days. Low pressure isn’t eligible for compensation unless it happens on two or more occasions within a 28 day period.
2. Bottles water stations remain in place and will do so until at least Tuesday. Same with the temporary portaloos on the Harbour.
3. As a precautionary measure portaloos have been delivered to secondary schools across Canterbury to help ensure exams can go ahead as planned next week
4. The Playhouse has put on an extra matinee show today for those who couldn’t attend the cancelled performances of Gaslight this week
5. Next Sunday (7th June) is the Whitstable Town Open Gardens. Refreshments and maps are available from both the Umbrella and Stream Walk
6. Whitstable Museum has opened a permanent Peter Cushing Exhibition following its refurbishment work.
7. The Foodbank is looking for volunteer drivers and driver assistants. Shifts last 60-90 minutes and are hugely rewarding. Ring 01227 501 944
8. Revival is partnering with the LTA to offer a beginners padel course for people who use its services. The sessions will take place Monday 2-3pm over an eight week period. Email [email protected]
9. Early bird season tickets at the football club end tonight at midnight. We wish the new manager luck as he starts finalising his roster
10. The Dream Louder festival showcasing young music talent is on Friday, Saturday, Sunday at the Monument.
I’m back in the country this week but will be also pulling together a dossier to speak to SE Water about how the emergency response failed. Please email me at [email protected] with your stories.

Three new bus stops coming to town…

District set for dozens of new bus shelters

Bus passengers are set to benefit from new or upgraded shelters at almost 40 bus stops in the Canterbury district following our successful bid for £258,000 of funding.

The major improvement to waiting facilities is an important element of our bus-led transport strategy, which aims to encourage more people out of their cars and onto public transport.

The locations for new or enhanced shelters have been chosen following requests from members of the public, as well as the local knowledge of council officers and ward councillors, as long as they fit some basic criteria.

These include the presence of a pavement or a verge, enough space to accommodate a shelter and still allow room for pedestrians to walk past it, and the likely level of use by passengers.

We will be looking for a company to install the shelters via our usual tender process, with the winning bidder to start work this autumn and complete on site by March 2027.

Bidders will be invited to put forward design proposals as part of this process.

Cabinet member for transport, Cllr Mel Dawkins, said: “This is absolutely fantastic news. I am so pleased we are going to be able to provide better waiting facilities for so many bus passengers with this money. It is something that is raised with us frequently by residents.

“A lot of factors go into deciding whether to use the buses, and while a reliable and punctual service are two key examples, knowing you’re not going to get drenched while waiting for it to arrive is right up there too.

“And because we’ve chosen many of the sites using feedback from our residents, we know the demand is there and that they are going to be well used.

“Many people who only use cars do not comprehend the reality of the need for a proper shelter and view of approaching buses when they also have mobility issues.

“With a fair wind behind us, we hope to have the vast majority of them installed by the time we get to late autumn and winter, when they will really come into their own.”

The cash we applied for is coming from Kent County Council’s countywide Bus Service Improvement Plan funding from central government, £3 million of which was earmarked for bus shelter improvements.

KCC’s Deputy Cabinet member for highways and transport, Spencer Dixon, said: “This funding is about making everyday journeys easier and more comfortable for people who rely on buses.

“We’re pleased to support Canterbury City Council with this investment, which will make a real difference for residents by providing safer, more comfortable places to wait and helping to encourage greater use of public transport.

“KCC ran a shelter grant scheme for district and parish councils as we understand the importance they can have on the overall passenger experience.

“We look forward to seeing the improvements delivered in Canterbury as well as in a number of other districts across the county where grant funding has also been awarded under our Bus Service Improvement Plan.”

The locations of the new or improved shelters are as follows:

Ye Olde Beverlie, Canterbury (pictured on this post)
Archbishop’s School (x2), Canterbury
Downs Road, Canterbury (north east bound)
Headcorn Drive, Canterbury (opposite Halstead Close)

Although no permission is required, we will write to the owners of homes where shelters are being installed outside as a courtesy, and would consider not proceeding with a particular location if a serious and legitimate objection was lodged.
