In the last couple of years we continue to witness some dynamic developments occurring around the world, that the film industry can take some credit for. Filmmakers continue to use their powerful media to highlight and influence the conversation in subtle ways to ripen issues for conversations... what therefore are the opportunities in here for personalizing the conversations locally to issues we care about?
We are excited to be in a time where conversations are ongoing globally on the importance of telling stories that capture the diversity of audiences around the world.
From Films like ‘hidden figures to ‘Black Panther’ to ‘Moonlight’ and extending even onto movements round the globe!
Turning the focus light onto women, how are our films representative of the modern woman? What are the opportunities we have to use this powerful vehicle to both highlight and close gaps in education and informing? As well as to awaken the consciousness of society to practices and cultures that may need to shift?
Film are usually a mirror of the environment. Are filmmakers using this tool responsibly?
Both female and male filmmakers unfortunately, continue to put out images that not only reenforces negative perceptions, but sets the tune in ways society is just beginning to fully awaken to! The portrayal of women as victims and bitter and vindictive and all the negatives stereotypes we continue to see of the ‘wicked step mother’ for instance, or the mother in law who consistently harasses her daughter in law or the Barbie-like vixen... the list goes on!
Is this representative? and are these the images we want to continue to see? Images that we want our kids to see and grow up with?
The commercial viability in breaking out of the old box and the value of exploring positive images of women in films has been more than demonstrated extensively in major Box Office hits in the last couple of years! Films about Winnie Mandela’s role in the struggle to Freedom, the young lady in charge of technology in Black Panther, TV shows like Scandal etc are all representative of the new direction! What are our local examples we can call up?
