This year a European team consisting of Global Underwater Explorers from The Netherlands, Croatia, Sweden, Germany, Belgium, Czech Republic, Switserland and Italy traveled to the beautiful region around Otocac in Croata to document one of the springs leading in the Gacka River. River Gacka is the second cleanest river in Europe, and the third cleanest river in the world. This proves that the flora and fauna in the river is rich and important.

Primary destination was Majerovo Vrelo cave. Main objective for the team was to photograph and film the underwater cave, create a detail map of the first area to the cave, cleanup the cave and the entrance pond from pollution and create a documentary.

The Team:
Josef Chroust, Nils Gilles ,Flip Vernooij, Geert Allaert, Jeroen Wilms, Jeroen Steinberg Dijana Stupar, Huub Martens, Bart Hoogeveen, Serge Pellikaan, Jens Olberts, Ramona, Roger Hovind, Jimmy Borgh, Iva Peterková, Nic Heuer Britta Hennes, Mia Buchs, Christoph Bühler, Anne-Marie Bresser, JP Bresser, Maurizio Grbac, Andrea Marassich

Day 3 of cave
Project Morpheus, Johannes reports:

We made such good progress on day two of Project Morpheus, that we were already able to draft a first stig-map in the evening. For today (day three) we had three objectives:

1. To complete the measurements (up to station 19),
2. Establish a good GPS fix of our reference line to be able to overlay the final stig-map on Google Earth (important for an accurate reference to the main road crossing the cave tunnel)
3. Make a video documentary.

So, a lot of work. One lesson of yesterday was that in addition to planning, a surface manager would help working efficiently, so that's what we put in place today. This worked really well (thanks Anne-Marie :).

At basecamp all instructions for the measurements were run through again with the four teams. Teams entered in agreed order and returned with the results every 30-60 min.
In the meantime JP started with taking video shots, both from the air using the DJI Drone and under water and on land, interviewing Woytek Philip and Maurizio Grbac about the importance of documenting the fresh water resources in the region.

After the second round of dives, we had all measurements and other objectives completed, so there was even time for a fun dive. And there will be more of those tomorrow!

Day 1 of Cave project Morpheus, Ingrid reports:

The first day of the Morpheus project has started. Morpheus, God of Sleep, no, we woke up immedately. there is a lot of work to be done!
Our main purpose is to measure the source Vukovica Vrelo. The government wants to know if they can build a bigger road for heavy trucks passing by carrying large blocks of limestone. The road present road is built just about 15 meters above the Cave.
Our second purpose is find new caves, connections to the known caves etc.

Wojtek gave us a relaxing tour to the two caves, First Glavas and after that our main working source, Vukovica Vrelo.
Now its time to make plans: how will we get the work done, what do we need to do? Lots and lots to think and of course talk about!
We decided that three tasks should be done at first:
- setup base camp
- creating a somewhat comfortable entry/exit (especially for the women :-) )
- place a static horizontal and vertical baseline as a reference for measuring.

After that everybody made a first dive to check the source and the cave.
We did this all on our first day! And discussed and make a planning for day two. Although most of us never met before, we are after this first day already a group. Cannot wait till tomorrow!!

Great job done by GUE-BE team. Weather conditions were almost perfect for Cave diving in this region. Just a bit of flow and we were lucky with rain. Vukovica Vrelo completely surveyed and line extended another 120 meters. Also great job was done in Radonino Vrelo and Modric cave . Water level in Peruca lake is lowest I ever seen. Entrance in Radonino vrelo was at 12 meters depth and now we have cca 250 meters of line in. First survey in this cave was done by Florian Hang and Dave Mathershow in 2011. Petra and Stephane did some awesome video footage witch will be part of the documentary we are preparing for the end of the year.
Result's of this week of exploration will be visible on this page soon. Thanks to all of you guys.
