Shapes 🏗️🚌

Look up: a building hanging out over nothing at all. Look down: a Futura2 that’s been working since breakfast and still looks sharp.

Fun fact — that slanted nose isn’t just styling. It goes back to the original Bova Futura in the 1980s, and it was always about air: less drag, less fuel, further on a tank. The shape aged well enough that the Futura2 was named International Coach of the Year, and it’s still doing the job every day out on the road.

VDL launched the next-generation Futura this year, so ours is officially the older sibling now. Doesn’t seem to care. 😄

🧱 Billund, Denmark — the home of the brick.

A few things we picked up along the way:

🔹 “LEGO” comes from the Danish leg godt — “play well.” Ole Kirk Kristiansen started the company back in 1932.
🔹 The modern brick was patented in 1958, and one made that year still clicks perfectly onto one made today. That’s the kind of engineering we appreciate.
🔹 LEGOLAND Billund opened in 1968 — the very first one, and still the original.
🔹 LEGO makes more tyres per year than any tyre company on the planet — hundreds of millions of them. Ours are slightly bigger. 🚌
🔹 Just six 2x4 bricks can be combined in over 915 million ways. Thankfully our seating plans are simpler.

Great group, great weather, and a lot of very happy faces at LEGOLAND Billund today. 🇩🇰

One request though: we’ve been staring at the shelves and still no VDL Futura set. Dutch coach, Danish bricks — surely that’s a collaboration worth building? We’ll take the first one. 😄

🇩🇪 Bunker Valentin, Bremen-Farge

Our VDL Futura parked yesterday in front of one of the most sobering structures in northern Germany.

Between 1943 and 1945, the N**i regime built this concrete colossus on the banks of the Weser to mass-produce Type XXI U-boats — submarines meant to turn the Battle of the Atlantic. At over 35,000 m² it remains the largest free-standing bunker in Germany, with a roof designed to survive direct bomb hits.

It never launched a single submarine. Allied air raids and the end of the war stopped construction before the yard was finished.

The real story is the human one. Thousands of forced labourers from across Europe and North Africa — civilians, prisoners of war and concentration camp prisoners — were made to work here. More than 1,600 died during construction from malnutrition, disease and arbitrary killings. Since November 2015 the site has been a memorial and place of learning.

A 1.5 km path leads through the grounds and into the bunker itself, past 25 information stations, starting at the “Extermination Through Work” monument. Admission is free, and a multimedia guide is available in German and English.

If you’re bringing a group through northern Germany, this is worth the detour from Bremen. Not a photo stop — a place to stand still for an hour.

🇳🇴 While Europe melts, our drivers are digging jumpers out of their suitcases.

This is the view from a roadside stop near Voss — one of those places where the water goes so still that the farms, the forest and the sky all get painted twice. Our Sprinter is on the right. The picnic table has probably seen a thousand better photographers than us.

A few things about this corner of Norway:

🏔️ Voss is the adrenaline capital of Norway — every June it hosts Ekstremsportveko, the world’s largest extreme sports festival. Skydiving, kayaking, base jumping, paragliding. And then everyone goes home for a quiet dinner.

⛪ Vangskyrkja, the stone church in the town centre, was consecrated in 1277. When Voss was bombed and burned in April 1940, the church stood. It’s still standing today.

✝️ Just outside it is St. Olav’s Cross, raised around 1023 to mark the Christianization of the valley. A thousand years of people stopping to look at these mountains.

🍽️ And the local delicacy is smalahove — smoked sheep’s head, served whole. Eyes included. Traditionally you start with the ear.

🌡️ Today’s forecast here: sweater weather. Somewhere south of us, it’s 38°C.

A painting? No — just the view from our driver’s hotel room in Barcelona this morning. 🖼️
And here’s something most tourists never notice, but every coach driver in Barcelona is grateful for:
When engineer Ildefons Cerdà designed Barcelona’s famous Eixample district in 1859, he cut the corner off every single city block at 45 degrees. His reasoning? Better visibility, more light, and easier turning for the vehicles of the future.
He was planning for horse-drawn trams. He accidentally designed the most coach-friendly city grid in Europe — 160 years before our 13-meter bus would thank him for it. 🚌
A few more things you learn driving groups through this city:
🏗️ The Sagrada Família has been under construction since 1882 — longer than the Great Pyramids took to build.
🌳 Those trees lining nearly every street? Plane trees, planted by the tens of thousands — which is why the boulevards feel like green tunnels in summer.
🛣️ Under the Gothic Quarter’s medieval lanes lie the streets of Barcino, the original Roman city — you can literally walk on 2,000 years of history.

Cast your mind back to 26 April — the day the heart of London shut down.

Nearly 60,000 runners. 800,000 spectators. The biggest marathon ever staged, and the day a runner broke the two-hour barrier for the first time in history. Roads closed across Westminster, police everywhere, “no stopping at any time.”

And parked right in the middle of it, under Big Ben? One of our coaches. 🚌

Look closely and count the rules in this one photo: Red Route. Road closed. Traffic control ahead. Holding area. London is the toughest city in Europe to move a coach through — and that was its most locked-down day of the entire year.

We were there anyway. 😉

Still smiling about this one. People know us from Milan, Rome, Barcelona and the Côte d’Azur — but our map runs all the way to Paris, Amsterdam and London.

There’s a roundabout in Paris that French drivers genuinely fear.

12 avenues. Zero lane markings. A rule where cars entering have priority over cars already going around — the opposite of every roundabout you know. It’s so notoriously chaotic that accidents there are famously settled 50/50, with nobody even trying to assign blame. 110,000 vehicles take it on every single day.

And right in the middle of it, under the Arc de Triomphe? One of our coaches. 🚌

People know us from Milan, Rome, Barcelona and the Côte d’Azur. But our map runs a lot further north — Paris, Amsterdam, London. Same fleet, same drivers who’ll calmly thread a 13-metre coach through the Étoile and drop your group off without breaking a sweat.

Wherever in Europe you’re headed, we’ve probably already parked there. 😉

🌿 Throwback Thursday

This bright green beast was one that started it all. Back in 2015 she became our very first Euro 5 coach, brought over from Germany, back when VDL still wore the Bova badge. We were a young company betting big on quality, and honestly we were a little obsessed with her. Washed her, polished her, took way too many photos.

After few years she’s moved on to a new owner, but here’s the part that made us smile. She’s still out there working every day, still going strong and still reliable.

Coaches come and go in this business, but some of them just stay with you. This one earned her place in our story.

Here’s to the green beast. Still turning heads, still turning wheels. 💚

🌴 Bonjour from the Côte d’Azur! 🌊

One of our VDL Futura coaches woke up this morning on the French Riviera — and what a place to start the day. Palm-lined boulevards, Belle Époque façades, and that impossibly blue Mediterranean. ☀️
