🔋 EU Battery passports: what they are and why they matter.
A battery passport (mainly for EV, LMT and industrial batteries > 2 kWh) is a digital record that contains key information about a battery and follows it throughout its life cycle. It is the digital identity card for the battery.
👉 They will become mandatory from 2027 (Europe).
For dangerous goods and logistics, this matters because:
🔎 Better battery identification
📄 Easier access to safety and handling information
🔁 Improved traceability across the supply chain
♻️ Better decisions on reuse, repurposing or disposal
🛂 Stronger market surveillance..
Who is responsible for the battery passport?
Primarily:
• The manufacturer, or the economic operator placing the battery on the EU market
But it also impacts:
• Importers, distributors, logistics providers, repairers, recyclers…
⚠️ Important:
Battery passports do not replace ADR (or other regulation) requirements, but they support safer handling and better compliance before and after transport.
