Kawah Ijen, Banyuwangi, Indonesia
Kawah Ijen is a famous volcanic crater located in East Java, Indonesia, near the town of Banyuwangi. It is best known for its stunning turquoise acidic lake, the largest of its kind in the world, and its rare "blue fire" phenomenon, caused by ignited sulfuric gas emissions.
Hiking to Kawah Ijen is a popular adventure, with the trek starting from Paltuding base camp. The ascent takes around 1.5 to 2 hours, leading to breathtaking views of the crater and its surroundings. Visitors can also witness traditional sulfur miners carrying heavy loads of bright yellow sulfur from the crater floor.
The best time to visit is in the early morning or late at night to see the mesmerizing blue flames. However, due to the strong sulfur fumes, visitors are advised to wear gas masks for safety. Kawah Ijen offers a unique and otherworldly experience, making it one of Indonesia’s most extraordinary natural attractions.
