Firstly I would like to thank Mary t sweeney and fellow attendees for holding the meeting, but have to say I have decided to go it alone with the help of the public in holding Donegal County Council to account.

Your questions will form part of my legal case.

Formal Statement Regarding Employee Safety and Road Infrastructure

I am writing as the owner of a local taxi business to express my serious concerns regarding the continued inadequacy of road infrastructure in the Letterkenny area and the impact it is having on the safety and wellbeing of my employees.

As an employer, I have a duty to provide, so far as is reasonably practicable, a safe place and safe system of work for my employees. I am becoming increasingly concerned that the current road infrastructure, together with persistent congestion and delays, is creating working conditions that place unacceptable levels of stress on drivers.

Daily traffic congestion, lengthy delays, and inadequate road capacity create constant pressure on drivers to meet customer expectations while operating safely. These conditions contribute to mental fatigue, increased stress, reduced concentration, and a greater risk of road traffic incidents.

Despite repeated recognition of congestion problems in the area over many years, the pace of infrastructure delivery has not matched the needs of the growing population, businesses, and transport services that rely on the road network.

I am now concerned that I may no longer be able to state with confidence that I can continue to provide a safe working environment for my employees if these conditions persist. This is not a statement made lightly, but one based on my legal responsibilities as an employer and my obligation to protect the health, safety, and welfare of my staff.

I urge Donegal County Council and the relevant public authorities to treat this matter as an issue of public and workplace safety rather than simply one of traffic management. I ask that urgent action be taken to accelerate the delivery of the necessary infrastructure improvements and to engage with affected businesses whose employees face these risks every day.

I would welcome the opportunity to discuss these concerns further and to provide examples of how the current infrastructure is affecting the safe operation of my business.

I know a public meeting organised tomorrow evening in Station House Hotel at 7.00 p.m

Maybe we could gather up a few questions to put to the council either tomorrow evening if they attend or even to draft a letter to the Council.

Who from the Council applied for the funding for active travel. Had they previous experience in active travel implementation?

Who from the emergency services attended the workshop for the design of the Active Travel Scheme from Hospital roundabout to the Optum Roundabout?

Who from the emergency services attended the workshop for the design of the Four Lane Project.?

Had this indivdual(s) the expertise to know what was being laid out in the design and its possible consquences on emergency services.

Who were the road designers/engineers behind the Active Travel schemes and had they previous experience in design and implementation of these schemes

What was the thinking behind removing turn in lanes from Hospital Roundabout to Optum Roundabout?. Think I heard the figure of 16/17 turn ins of the main road to hospitals,schools,housing estate.

What was the thinking behind reducing the Ballyraine Road to Ballyraine Halls roundabout to 1 lane, thus having no left filter lane to head towards Sweeneys Filling Station.

What was the thinking behind reducing the road from Kiltoy Roundabout to Thomas Keys roundabout,thus having no left filter lane to head towards Arena 7.

Do the Council intend on continuing with the Active Travel schemes in Glencar and Ballymacool?

If yes when is the intended start date?
If no how much has been spent so far in design and other expenses.?

A Call for Accountability from Donegal County Councillors

As a citizen and taxpayer of County Donegal, I believe the people of this county deserve safe, modern infrastructure and effective representation.

For years, major transport projects have experienced delays while residents and businesses continue to face congestion, poor road conditions, and safety concerns. These delays have real consequences for local communities, commuters, emergency services, and businesses that rely on an efficient road network.

Councillors are elected to represent the interests of the people and to hold the executive of Donegal County Council to account. Where significant infrastructure problems remain unresolved over many years, it is reasonable for the public to ask whether elected representatives have fulfilled that responsibility.

I therefore call on councillors who believe they have been unable to deliver the leadership, oversight, and advocacy expected by the people who elected them to consider whether remaining in office is in the county's best interests. If they believe they have done everything reasonably possible, they should instead explain publicly what actions they have taken, what obstacles remain, and what concrete steps they will take to secure progress.

This is not a personal attack on any individual. It is a call for accountability, transparency, and leadership. The people of Donegal deserve clear answers, measurable progress, and representatives who are prepared to accept responsibility for the performance of local government.

Whether through renewed commitment or by making way for new leadership, the interests of the people of Donegal should come first.
