Dún Briste (Irish for "Broken Fort") is a dramatic sea stack located off the coast of Downpatrick Head, near the village of Ballycastle in County Mayo, on the Wild Atlantic Way in western Ireland.

Key Insights:
Formation: Dún Briste was separated from the mainland by sea erosion during a fierce storm in 1393. According to legend, a chieftain named Crom Dubh refused to convert to Christianity, so St. Patrick struck the headland with his staff, splitting the stack from the mainland.

Height and Structure: The sea stack is about 50 meters (165 feet) high and composed of horizontal layers of sedimentary rock, including limestone and shale, rich in fossils.

Ecological Significance: It's a nesting site for seabirds like puffins, kittiwakes, and razorbills, making it a haven for birdwatchers.

Accessibility: While you can't climb the sea stack, it's clearly visible from the viewing platform at Downpatrick Head, which also features blowholes, cliffs, and a historic WWII-era EIRE sign.
