Bahraini Ali al-Awadhi gained fame when filmed performing Tawaf as 1941 flood waters surrounded Kaaba in Makkah. 1941 flood photos show al-Awadhi in water over 1.5m deep near Maqam Ibrahim, brother and friend seated at Kaaba's rear door. Al-Awadhi, who died in 2015, recalled being 12 studying in Mecca during 1941 floods when rain lasted uninterrupted for seven days. Al-Awadhi said he went to Mecca's Haram with brother, two friends, and teacher during 1941 floods. Finding it submerged, he—a regular swimmer—proposed swimming Tawaf to count their pilgrimage. First to swim Tawaf was Prophet's companion Abdullah al-Zubayr per Muhammad's biography. Others like scholar Badr al-Din bin Jama'a dived to kiss the stone each circuit. Swimming Tawaf is rare worship. Mecca floods rarely rise high enough to swim except twice: once in Islamic era, once in 1941.
