Oppositon leader Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Dharavi, Mumbai, where he spent nearly two hours interacting with local artisans and small business owners from globally recognized workshops such as Chamar Studio and Maruti Leather Crafts.

The visit highlighted Dharavi not merely as Asia’s largest slum, but as a powerful manufacturing ecosystem where skilled artisans transform raw materials into high-quality products that reach international markets.

At Maruti Leather Crafts, Sachin Shinde sir spoke about a poster he created inside the workshop that brings together several great social reformers and leaders from different castes, religions, and communities. He explained that the poster represents the struggles and sacrifices of those who worked for social change before them. Because of the efforts made by these activists in the past, people like him today are able to work with dignity and build their livelihoods. Seeing these figures every day reminds him that it is now their responsibility to also contribute something meaningful for society.

During the visit, Rahul Gandhi observed the craftsmanship in these workshops and even tried learning the signature stitching technique from the artisans. He also assured the craftsmen that local Indian brands and skilled artisans deserve wider recognition and support.

Artisans further raised concerns about the proposed Dharavi redevelopment project, expressing fears that dismantling the area could disrupt the delicate ecosystem of small industries and livelihoods that has developed there over decades.

It has now been one full year since Rahul Gandhi visited the leather workshops of Dharavi — a moment that brought attention to the craftsmanship and entrepreneurial energy working inside this unique production ecosystem.

During his visit to Maruti Leather Craft Studio, Rahul Gandhi spent time directly engaging with artisans and entrepreneurs. Rather than simply observing, he stepped into the process himself, stitching leather alongside craftsmen to understand the skill, precision, and labor that goes into every product.

The discussion also explored the structural challenges faced by India’s leather industry — why highly skilled artisans often remain behind the scenes while global brands capture most of the recognition and value.

A key voice in the discussion was our Creative Director, Sachin Shinde, founder of Maruti Leather Craft. After studying in London and working abroad, he returned to India with a clear realization: many international luxury brands sell products crafted in India for premium prices, while the artisans behind them rarely receive the credit they deserve.

This insight led him to build Varsa, a brand rooted in Indian heritage. By reinterpreting traditional designs such as the centuries-old Kolhapuri chappal with improved ergonomics and contemporary design thinking, the vision is to position Indian craftsmanship confidently in the global luxury space.

The early response was remarkable. When the team launched their first international campaign on Kickstarter, the initial goal was reached in under two hours — proving that the world is ready for authentic products built on Indian legacy and skill.

More than a political visit, the interaction highlighted something powerful: Dharavi is not just a place — it is a living manufacturing ecosystem, where raw materials, skilled labor, and production come together to support generations of artisans and entrepreneurs.

A year later, this moment continues to remind us of the strength, heritage, and global potential of Indian leather craftsmanship.

One year ago, the lanes of Dharavi were preparing for an important visit.

News cameras had arrived, conversations had begun, and there was growing curiosity around a small leather workshop that had quietly built a global reputation — Maruti Leather Craft.

Before the visit even happened, media reports were already highlighting something many people outside Dharavi rarely see:
the incredible craftsmanship and entrepreneurial spirit of the artisans working here.

Led by Sachin Shinde and a dedicated team of craftsmen, Maruti Leather Craft represents the skill that exists within Dharavi’s leather industry — where handmade bags, wallets, and custom leather products are created with precision and passion.

From small workshops in Mumbai to international markets, these handcrafted pieces travel far beyond the narrow lanes where they are made. Some have even reached luxury destinations like JW Marriott as corporate and hospitality products.

The media coverage that day built anticipation around the visit of Rahul Gandhi, but it also did something equally important.

It brought attention to the people behind the craft.

The artisans.
The workshop.
And the story of Maruti Leather Craft.

Today, one year later, we look back at that moment as a reminder that Dharavi is more than what it is often known for.

It is also a place of skill, dedication, and world-class craftsmanship.

And this was the moment when many people first began to notice.

One year ago today, this moment was captured by ABP Majha — just before an important visit to Maruti Leather Craft.

In this news coverage, opposition leader Rahul Gandhi was on his way to interact with the Maruti Leather Craft team during his Mumbai visit. The report highlighted the work being done at the studio and the growing anticipation before the meeting.

For Sachin Shinde sir and the entire Maruti Leather Craft team, it was a significant day — an opportunity to present their dedication to traditional leather craftsmanship and the people behind the work.

Looking back today, this video still carries the excitement of that moment right before the big interaction.

A proud memory for Maruti Leather Craft.
