A brief history
My family started Apis mellifera beekeeping with 2 colonies in 1996 (2053 BS). After receiving training on colony
management and getting recognition as Beekeeping Resource Centre from Beekeeping
Development Section of Department of Agriculture, we intensified our beekeeping related
activities. We have established hive carpentry workshops, a honey processing unit and training
facili
ties. Now, we manage over 250 bee colonies and have our own brand of honey “Sagar Honey” which
is getting good recognition in the domestic market. We deal with 30-40 metric tonnes of honey
in a year and supply over 2000 bee hives to different development organizations that promote
beekeeping as a part of income generation. We have been collaborating with GTZ, MEDEP,
Winrock International and other government and non government organizations to promote
beekeeping and honey market. At present, marketing of honey seems to be a big problem since per capita consumption of
honey in Nepal is very low. High cost of transportation and weaker institutional mechanism to
assure quality also pose difficulty in exporting Nepali honey. The main activities of SBKI are:
Bee Hive industry
Production and marketing of bee colonies of Apis Mellifera and Apis Cerana
Production and marketing of other bee keeping materials
Queen raring
Honey Production and marketing
Marketing support to small beekeepers
Bee Keeping trainings and consultation services from own resources as well as in partnership with other organizations
Study visit in international market
Free counseling services to farmer
