Locorotondo: The dreamy village at the heart of the Itria Valley

Nestled among trulli and lush green hills, Locorotondo owes its name to the perfectly round shape of its historic center. Designated as one of Italy’s most beautiful villages, it stands out for its whitewashed houses, traditional pointed roofs (known as “cummerse”), and flower-adorned balconies that create a unique atmosphere.

It is the ideal place for those who wish to experience authentic charm, far from the chaos of the more crowded tourist spots.

Every whitewashed house is embellished with wrought-iron balconies and vibrant flower pots. From the viewpoint, you can enjoy a stunning panorama of the Itria Valley—a green sea dotted with trulli, centuries-old olive trees, and orderly vineyards.

[English/Italiano]
Alberobello, designated a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1996, is home to over 1,500 trulli – those iconic cone-shaped dwellings that have become the symbol of Apulia. This fairy-tale town seems to exist out of time, with its distinctive honey-colored limestone buildings dating back to the 14th century. Originally, the trulli were built as temporary, dismantlable structures to evade taxation, and over time they have become an excellent example of efficient, sustainable rural architecture.

The historic center is divided into two main areas:
- Rione Monti: The more touristy area, bustling with shops and restaurants.
- Aia Piccola: A quieter, more authentic quarter where locals still live.

Every trullo tells a story – from the lime-washed walls to the mysterious symbols painted on the conical roofs (often with astronomical or religious meanings) and the unique construction techniques used without mortar. Wandering through the narrow streets is like entering another world. The town truly comes alive in the evening, when fewer tourists allow the soft lighting to illuminate the cone roofs and create a magical atmosphere.

Alberobello also offers visitors:
• The Trullo Sovrano – the only two-story trullo
• The Trullo-shaped Church of Sant'Antonio
• Local handicrafts and souvenirs
• Traditional Apulian cuisine
• An excellent base for exploring the Itria Valley

Best time to visit:
• Spring/Autumn: Mild weather, cultural events, fewer crowds
• Early morning/evening: Magical light, fewer tourists
• December: Festive lights create a special atmosphere

Alberobello is perfectly positioned to easily reach Locorotondo, Martina Franca, Cisternino, and the Adriatic coast beaches. Moreover, it’s not far from the rest of Apulia and even Matera.

PERIODO MIGLIORE:
• Primavera/Autunno: clima mite, meno affollato

[English/Italiano]
Lecce, often called "the Florence of the South," is a masterpiece of Baroque art sculpted in the distinctive honey-colored local stone. Every corner of the historic center tells centuries of history through richly decorated facades, majestic churches, and noble palaces.

The beating heart of the city is Piazza Sant’Oronzo, where the Roman amphitheater attests to its ancient origins. From here, wandering through the narrow streets, one is awed by the majesty of the Basilica of Santa Croce, the ultimate expression of Lecce’s Baroque style, its facade resembling delicate stone lace. Not far away, Piazza Duomo astonishes with its theatrical beauty, surrounded by the Cathedral, the bell tower, and the bishop’s palace.

But Lecce is not just about architecture. The city lives on vibrant traditions: artisan workshops where papier-mâché and Lecce stone are crafted, historic cafés serving the signature iced coffee with almond milk, and pastry shops that fill the air with the aroma of freshly baked pasticciotti.

In the evening, the historic center transforms: illuminated palaces create a magical atmosphere, while bars and restaurants come alive. Here, traditional cuisine blends with contemporary interpretations, offering a unique gastronomic experience.

Let’s not forget that Lecce is “the capital of Salento” and, as such, a meeting point of its magnificence. It is also the perfect base from which to fall in love with all of Salento, with its fairy-tale villages and endless dreamy beaches.

💡 When to visit:
• Spring/Autumn: Perfect weather, cultural events
• Summer: Festivals and nightlife
• Winter: A more intimate atmosphere with fewer tourists

• Primavera/Autunno: clima perfetto, eventi culturali
• Estate: festival e vita notturna
• Inverno: atmosfera raccolta, meno turisti

Gallipoli, meaning "Beautiful City" in Greek, is a bridge between sea and history, where past charm blends with present vitality. The historic center stands on a limestone island connected to the mainland by a 16th-century bridge, creating a unique urban setting between two harbors.

🏰The ancient heart of Gallipoli tells stories of merchants and fishermen through its narrow streets and historic palaces. The impressive city walls, once protection against invaders, now offer breathtaking walks above the sea. The Angevin Castle watches over the port, while the Cathedral of Sant'Agata stands majestic in the old town's heart.
The harbor, bustling with locals and fishermen, symbolizes the bond with the sea. And the traditional fish market, still active today, shows how the city keeps its maritime traditions alive.
In the evening, the historic center comes alive with a mix of tradition and contemporary vibrancy, revealing the city's dual nature - ancient and modern.

🏖️ The coastline offers an incredible variety of beaches:
• The famous Baia Verde with its golden sand
• The historic Purità Beach in the old town
• The Rivabella shoreline
• Countless beach clubs and wild coves

Gallipoli is also perfect for exploring other Salento gems like Porto Cesareo, Santa Maria di Leuca, Otranto, and the inland villages.

• Innumerevoli lidi e calette selvagge

💡 Periodo migliore:
• Giugno/Settembre: clima perfetto, meno affollato
• Luglio/Agosto: eventi e vita notturna

[English/Italiano]
🎭Cultural Weekend in Salento: A Sample Itinerary

Salento is not just about sea and sun—it’s a treasure trove of art, history, and traditions waiting to be discovered, perhaps through a cultural weekend getaway.

🏛️ Friday – Brindisi
Arrive on Friday afternoon in Brindisi, the gateway to Salento along the Adriatic coast. Spend a few hours exploring its seaside charm. Take a stroll along Regina Margherita Promenade, an ideal starting point for discovering the city: within a two-minute walk you’ll reach the Virgilio Steps, crowned by the Roman Column; continue for another five minutes along the promenade and you’ll arrive at the beautiful Santa Teresa Square. Alternatively, head further into the city to Piazza Duomo—its most enchanting square, surrounded by historic buildings, the provincial archaeological museum, and the Cathedral of San Giovanni Battista. If you’d like to extend your walk, pass by the Portico of the Templar Knights (now the entrance to the Archaeological Museum), then visit the fascinating Granafei Nervegna Palace (free admission, built in 1565) and the archaeological site of San Pietro degli Schiavoni, captivating remnants of an ancient Roman district.

Departure for Lecce or Ostuni
From Brindisi, either later that evening or after an overnight stay, you can set off the next morning toward Lecce—or take a detour via Ostuni (see the Ostuni post for reference: https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1X5Dk2zqSp/) and stop for a few hours before continuing on to Lecce, which is very well connected.

🎨 Saturday – Lecce
Spend Saturday in Lecce, often called “the Florence of the South,” and let its unmistakable Baroque charm enchant you. Wander the narrow streets of the historic center, admire the Basilica of Santa Croce, and marvel at the intricate details of the building facades. Immerse yourself in the vibrant heart of the city at Piazza Sant’Oronzo, home to some of Lecce’s most representative monuments: the Roman amphitheater; the 16th-century Palazzo del Seggio (known as the Sedile); and the Column of Sant’Oronzo—evocative of the one in Piazza della Libertà in Ostuni. In the evening, Lecce comes alive, offering a unique opportunity to experience Salentine nightlife and enjoy its culinary delights—from exquisite desserts to quality street food.

🌅 Sunday – Otranto & Return to Brindisi
Conclude your tour on Sunday morning in Otranto (see the related post for details: https://www.facebook.com/share/p/18mtCk3xFU/), UNESCO heritage city, where you can appreciate the historic center set against the sea.

🌅 Domenica, Otranto e ritorno a Brindisi

Otranto, where Italy's sunrire begins

Otranto is the easternmost point of the Salento Peninsula—and indeed of Italy. This city, where the sea reigns supreme with its incredibly crystal-clear waters, offers the chance to take a dip just steps away from its historic center. Here, history, the sea, and culture intertwine in a setting unlike any other.

Its ancient old town, with cobblestone streets and timeworn walls, tells centuries of tradition and culture, and has been recognized as a UNESCO "Messenger of Peace" site. The majestic Aragonese Castle and the splendid Cathedral—famous for its extraordinary mosaics (the largest mosaic floor in Europe)—stand as proud testaments to a rich past.

Today, Otranto is one of Apulia’s most popular tourist destinations, known for its cultural events and vibrant nightlife, especially in the harbor area.

A visit to Otranto will amaze you not only with the city itself, which captivates all your senses (including taste), but also with its surrounding territory: bauxite quarries, underground oil mills, traditional masserie, and dreamy beaches await the adventurous.
Along its coast, you’ll discover many hidden gems—from postcard-perfect coves to long, sandy stretches caressed by marvelous waters.
Famous are Baia dei Turchi and Porto Badisco, where legend has it the Homeric hero Aeneas once landed. Equally notable are the Alimini Lakes, brackish bodies of water encircled by kilometers of breathtaking beaches.

Otranto also serves as a strategic starting point for exploring Salento: nearby you’ll find Santa Cesarea Terme, Castro, and the coastal towns of Melendugno. Not far off are also Torre dell'Orso, Santa Maria di Leuca, Lecce, Ugento, and Gallipoli.

When to Visit:
• June/September: perfect weather, fewer crowds
• July/August: a lively scene with events and nightlife
• May/October: peaceful and tranquil

Otranto, dove in Italia nasce l'alba

• Giugno/Settembre: clima perfetto, meno affollata
• Luglio/Agosto: eventi e vita notturna
• Maggio/Ottobre: tranquillità assoluta

[English/Italiano]
A brief journey through Apulia's food culture 🍝🍇🍒

Apulian cuisine is a celebration of flavors, colors, and aromas. It can be loved by any palate thanks to the simplicity and deliciousness of its ingredients.
From a simple pasta e ceci (pasta with chickpeas) to an elaborate dessert like t***e della monaca (that can be translate in 'nun's breasts' pastries), these recipes showcase exquisite tastes through genuine, quality ingredients.

Every town in Apulia has its typical recipes or original interpretations, and each province has its own culinary identity. However, some dishes are at home throughout the region, despite local variations.
For example, no true Apulian hasn't tasted fave e cicorie (fava beans and chicory) prepared by their grandmother or mother (some add milk or potatoes to the fava purée, while others season the chicory differently, perhaps sautéing it with cherry tomatoes after boiling, but the basic ingredients remain the same).
Also typical are polpette (meatballs), made with significant variations depending on the city or town, but almost always immersed in plenty of sauce that will then dress pasta, perhaps a plate of handmade orecchiette. In some areas like Gargano, these meatballs are even made with leftover bread and can also be fried without sauce.
Similarly universal are dishes like rice with lentils or pasta with chickpeas.

The local gastronomic culture is extremely varied and abundant, from appetizers to desserts, it will surprise you with its creativity and diversity:

🏰 In the Foggia area, we find both humble dishes, like spaghetti with breadcrumbs, white fava beans and lagane (eggless tagliatelle), and simple but precious dishes like 'i susamille', sweets prepared with mandarin juice. The Gargano area is a world apart that, besides fish and meat dishes, features typical Podolian cow cheeses, raised in the national park's pastures, and simple appetizers like the typical bread and tomatoes.
Worth mentioning is the paposcia, a typical Gargano sandwich filled with local vegetables, cheeses, and optionally cold cuts according to taste.

🏛️ The Bari area offers a wide variety of recipes, from orecchiette to tiella barese (a rice, potato, and mussel casserole, or in its rarer vegetarian version with artichokes), from panzerotti to sgagliozze, from cartellate (Christmas sweets filled with honey or vincotto) to t***e della monaca, also called sospiri for their softness.
Every corner of this territory will delight you:
mozzarella from Gioia del Colle and Cassano delle Murge;
taralli, different in each place;
excellent fruits and vegetables, like the kaki mela (persimmon apple) created right here in Puglia, or the 'ferrovia' cherries, a native fruit variety, as well as the Barese gr**e, not to mention the delicious and famous local turnip tops.

🌊 In the Taranto area, besides countless dishes based on local mussels and other seafood, we find reinterpretations of typical dishes from the rest of Apulia: 'chiancaredde', the Taranto version of orecchiette with sauce; 'l' Cazun', a reinterpretation of panzerotto; or pucce, typical Salentine sandwiches filled with extra virgin olive oil, salt, strong ricotta, or stewed turnip greens.
Typical of the Taranto province are also the cured meats from the Murge area, notably the capocollo from Martina Franca, and stretched-curd cheeses.

🌞 Salento stands out for its many characteristic recipes, made at home or by artisanal food craftsmen, but always incredibly tasty.
From breakfast to dinner, from appetizer to dessert, Salentine cuisine never bores.
Famous are the pasticciotti leccesi, now filled with all kinds of delights, but also Lecce coffee, friseddha (a typical dried bread), variously dressed but often classically with oil, salt, and cherry tomatoes; or ciceri e tria (pasta with chickpeas), or the aforementioned pucce with various fillings.
For dessert lovers, Salento offers a carousel of flavors: besides the previously mentioned pasticciotti, noteworthy are the precious almond pastries, like cotognata, or mistazzoli (typical cookies), or the cupeta (typical nougat).

🏺 From the Barletta-Andria-Trani province, famous are the Andrian mozzarellas, among the best in the world.

We could talk about Apulian cuisine for days, without even mentioning the local olives and oil, world-class excellence, or hundreds of other excellent agricultural products like gr**es or early figs. Products that can be transformed into endless gastronomic combinations.
This guide could continue much longer, but wouldn't fit in one post!

le mozzarelle di Gioia del Colle e di Cassano delle Murge;
i taralli, differenti in ogni luogo;

Prodotti poi trasformabili in infinite combinazioni gastronomiche.
