Porta Messina (Taormina)

Porta Messina è una delle antiche porte di accesso alla città e fa parte delle antiche mura di cinta costruite dagli Arabi. Insieme a Porta Catania, che si trova nella posizione diametralmente opposta, delimita Corso Umberto, la via principale di Taormina. Tra queste due porte ne esiste una terza chiamata Porta di Mezzo o Torre dell’Orologio. Porta Messina è conosciuta anche con il nome di Porta Ferdinandea perché, a volere la sua costruzione, fu proprio il re Ferdinando IV di Borbone. L’anno dell’inaugurazione è il 1808, come risulta da una lapide ancora visibile in cima alla porta.
