In Sakuho, Nagano, you can meet the people behind everyday life in rural Japan.

Meet a sake brewer. Walk through an orchard with local farmers. Visit a fish farm fed by the pure waters of the Yatsugatake Mountains.

And at the end of the day, gather around the same table to share food, sake, stories, and a few laughs.

People I Keep Coming Back For

Whenever I visit Dake Onsen in Fukushima, there's one place I always return to.

It's a small local izakaya called Yorozuya, run by the Taira family.

The menu isn't designed for tourists. Homemade salt-seasoned pork stew, gyoza, fried chicken...

Simple, everyday dishes that local people have loved for years. Somehow, that's exactly what makes them special.

Inside, locals and travelers from around the world naturally end up sharing the same table, raising a glass together, and becoming friends.

Sometimes it's hard to tell whether Mr. Taira is serving customers or simply enjoying a drink with everyone. 😂

If you're lucky, you'll also catch a live performance by the Taira brothers, who are talented musicians as well.

In the end, I don't come here just for the food.

I come back to see the Taira family.

Whenever I visit Namie, there's one place I always stop by.

Once, I arrived on a day when the shop was closed.

"I was hoping to take some fresh surf clams home."

"How many do you need?"

With that, Mr. Shiba opened the shop just for me and prepared them on the spot.

Whenever we visit with a Kanpai Meets Japan group, he also prepares fresh flounder sashimi especially for us. It's the perfect way to begin our KANPAI together.

That's why I keep coming back.

At first, I thought it was for the incredible seafood.

But really...

I'm coming back to see Mr. Shiba.

Summer always reminds us of Green Hill, a small family-run guesthouse on Amami Oshima.

Evenings naturally end with a glass of Kokuto Shochu. The father joins the table, pouring drinks and sharing stories. The mother welcomes everyone with her warm smile, while their son, a professional surfer, brings the relaxed spirit of island life.

By the end of the evening, it doesn't feel like you're staying at a guesthouse anymore. It feels like you've been welcomed into someone's home.

That's why we keep wanting to return to Amami.

Today's Moment

Whenever we're in Masuda, Shimane, there's one place we always find ourselves returning to.

A small standing beer bar called Takatsuno, next to Takatsugawa River Beer.

It's not just about enjoying a cold craft beer.

It's about sharing stories, raising a glass, and laughing with people—whether you've known them for years or just met a few minutes ago.

Some places feel less like a bar and more like someone's living room.

Takatsuno is one of those places.

Maybe it's time to head back to Masuda for another cold beer.

Meet Mayumi Hadano, a local guide in Mojiko, Kitakyushu.

She’s always smiling.
And before you know it, everyone around her is smiling too.

But she’s not your typical tour guide.

One moment she’s sharing the history behind Mojiko’s beautiful old buildings.
The next, she’s leading you into a tiny standing bar hidden down a back alley.

And somehow, before long, everyone is raising a glass together.

She loves good drinks.
She loves meeting people.
And she truly loves Mojiko.

Wherever she goes, someone stops to say hello.
Walking through the town with Mayumi makes Mojiko feel three times more interesting.

By the end of the day, most people leave as fans of the town—and of Mayumi herself.
Kanpai to that. 🍻

A box of cherries arrived from Yamagata.

They were sent by Chie-san, a farmer who grows cherries, rice, and vegetables in rural Japan.

Every time we visit, she welcomes us with a warm smile and treats us like family.

As we enjoy these sweet cherries, we're reminded that behind every harvest is a person, a story, and a way of life.

Sometimes, a simple taste of the season can bring back memories of the people we've met along the way.

Some people become the reason you return to Japan.

Niida-san runs a small inn on the coast of Kitaibaraki. At first glance, he looks tough. But spend an evening with him, and you'll quickly discover one of the warmest people you'll ever meet.

Every night, after serving dinner and making sure his guests are taken care of, he pulls up a chair, pours a drink, and joins the conversation.

Years ago, the Great East Japan Earthquake destroyed his family’s inn and took his father’s life. He once told us there were moments when he thought about giving up.

But he didn't.

Today, his inn is filled with laughter, great food, and guests who return again and again.

When you're sitting around the table with Niida-san, listening to his stories and hearing his booming laugh echo through the room, your own worries somehow seem a little smaller.

The fish is delicious. The sake is excellent.

But the real reason people come back is him.

The rain had just fallen, leaving the blue stone pathway shining softly.

When I think back on this place, it isn’t the scenery I remember first.

It’s the owner of the dried fish shop.
The lady at the local standing bar.

I wonder how they’re doing.

The places we visit are beautiful.
But it’s the people we meet that stay with us.

Maybe that’s the real reason we travel.
