Fusion of Kochi Yosakoi & Trinidad Carnival! Join the excitement!

Dance forward with naruko clappers, fueled by SOCA beats and steelpan rhythms.

Yosakoi × Caribbean Carnival: The Evolution of "CANAVALAVA"

Blending the spirit of Yosakoi with the vibrant essence of Caribbean Carnival, "Kanabaru" made its debut at the 55th Yosakoi Festival in 2008. After a pause in 2017, the team restarted in 2023 as "CANAVALAVA," in collaboration with the multi-purpose facility 'AVA' in Kochi. The total production is led by "LIME Records" and Selector HEMO, spreading Caribbean culture and music in Japan. Rooted in the traditions of the Kochi Yosakoi Festival, CANAVALAVA integrates the lively energy of Trinidad & Tobago's Carnival. With dancers moving forward to choreographed steps while clapping naruko (wooden clappers), the team creates a unified story alongside musicians and lantern bearers. Adding authentic SOCA music and booming soundtracks, our performance fills the streets with unmatched energy. Our cultural exchange continues to grow deeper and richer. In 2017, we invited Soca King Machel Montano, and in 2023, Muhammad Muwakil from "FREETOWN COLLECTIVE" joined us. These collaborations push the boundaries of Yosakoi and Caribbean Carnival, creating a new cultural fusion that transcends borders. With the sounds of steelpan and the rhythm of our music truck, we bring excitement and smiles to the streets. CANAVALAVA’s performances embody the heart of Japanese tradition and the cheerfulness of the Caribbean, with a touch of fun and bold energy. We look forward to welcoming participants from around the world to experience this in Kochi!
