Fushimi Inari Taisha is the head shrine of over 30,000 Inari shrines across Japan.

Located in southern Kyoto, it is world-famous for its mesmerizing, seemingly endless path of vibrant orange torii gates stretching up the wooded slopes of the sacred Mount Inari.

Key Highlight

• The Gates: Over 10,000 hand-painted torii gates line the trails. Each was donated by a business or individual praying for success and prosperity.

• Fox Messengers: Foxes are considered the messengers of Inari, the Shinto god of rice and commerce. You will find dozens of stone fox statues across the grounds holding items like granary keys or scrolls.
The Hike: The full mountain trail is roughly 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) round-trip and takes about 2 hours to complete. (But we didn’t go that far) It features several smaller shrines and spectacular viewpoints along the way.

• Architecture: The grand Romon Gate at the entrance was donated in 1589 by the legendary historical leader Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

Nara is Japan’s first permanent capital established in 710 AD, is an ancient city located in the Kansai region less than an hour by train from Kyoto and Osaka.

Renowned for its free-roaming sika deer and eight UNESCO World Heritage sites,

it serves as the ultimate day trip for history, architecture, and nature lovers.

Must-See Attractions

• Nara Park: A massive, sprawling park right outside the city center where over a thousand wild sika deer roam freely. You can buy special “shika senbei” (deer crackers) to feed them, and they have even learned to bow in exchange for treats.

• Tōdai-ji Temple: One of Japan’s most historically significant and celebrated temples. It houses the Daibutsu (Great Buddha), a massive 15-meter-tall bronze statue seated inside one of the world’s largest wooden buildings.

Nara is a fascinating city with lots of history and deer.

We visited the Northwest part of Kyoto. Northwest Kyoto is a scenic, culturally rich area known for iconic World Heritage sites, including the Golden Pavilion (Kinkaku-ji) and the Ryoan-ji Zen rock garden. Located away from the dense city center, this area offers a quieter, more traditional experience featuring lush nature, historic temples, and easy access to the Arashiyama bamboo groves.

Arashiyama is a nationally designated Historic Site and Place of Scenic Beauty located along the western mountains of Kyoto. It is most famous for its soaring bamboo groves and historic temples.

Key Highlights in Northwest Kyoto:

• Kinkaku-ji Temple (The Golden Pavilion): Kyoto’s most iconic sight, featuring a stunning golden pavilion reflected in a pond.

• Ryoan-ji Temple: Known for its famous, minimalist Zen rock garden consisting of 15 carefully placed rocks.

• Arashiyama Bamboo Grove: A world-famous walking path cutting through towering, dense stalks of green bamboo.

• Tenryu-ji Temple: A head World Heritage Zen temple featuring a stunning 14th-century garden that frames the mountains.

Higashiyama is one of Kyoto’s premier historic districts, offering a glimpse into ancient Japan with its preserved narrow lanes, traditional wooden buildings, merchant shops, and high concentration of temples. Located along the eastern mountains, it is famous for the iconic Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Yasaka Shrine, and the charming, atmospheric streets of Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka.

• Kiyomizu-dera Temple: A UNESCO World Heritage site known for its large wooden stage with city views.
