🚗 DRIVING IN JAPAN – REQUIREMENTS
PLEASE READ CAREFULLY
All participants MUST bring the following on the day of the tour:
✅ Passport
✅ Valid driving documents — PHYSICAL COPY ONLY
You must meet at least ONE of the following requirements:
1. 1949 Geneva Convention International Driving Permit (IDP)
• Must be obtained from an official authorized issuing organization
• Must be issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention
• Must be presented as the original physical document
• Valid for one year from the date of issue
Examples of official issuing organizations:
• United States: AAA
• Australia: Authorized automobile associations / official issuing organizations
⚠️ IMPORTANT: Online, unofficial, fake, or scam IDPs are not accepted. Please confirm the authorized issuing organization with your local driving or transportation authority before obtaining your IDP.
2. Licenses from Certain Countries or Regions — No IDP Required
Applicable to eligible license holders from:
Belgium
France
Germany
Monaco
Switzerland
Taiwan
Requirements:
• Original valid driver’s license
• Official Japanese translation issued by JAF or another authorized organization
3. U.S. Military Personnel Based in Japan
• Valid SOFA Driver’s License
• Valid Military Identification
4. Japanese Driver’s License
Accepted for residents who:
• Converted an eligible foreign driver’s license to a Japanese license
• Obtained a Japanese driver’s license by completing the required licensing process in Japan
⚠️ IMPORTANT NOTES
Visitors from countries or regions that are not covered by the applicable 1949 Geneva Convention IDP system may not be eligible to drive in Japan using an IDP and may require a valid Japanese driver’s license.
Examples may include China, Vietnam, Mexico, Indonesia, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and others.
