Naganuma Park in Western Tokyo is way off the tourist track, but walk through the peaceful natural park to the top of the hill to come across this cute street that looks like it is out of a Studio Ghibli anime. I spent 90 minutes in the park and saw no more than 6 people, and a very cute Siberian Weasel.

This lake in a beautiful gorge is actually in Tokyo - yes, in the part of the prefecture just to the west of the city. Lake Shiromaru is a man-made lake in the Okutama Valley. It is easily accessed by train, especially from Shiromaru Station, and there is a lovely walk along the south side to another station. If you want something natural away from the crowds of Mount Takao the valley is a great place to get close to nature.

This is the Kawasaki Daishi Heiken-ji Temple pagoda in Kawasaki, just south of Tokyo. Although it may look old, it was built in 1984 for the 1150th anniversary of the death of Kobo Daishi, founder of the esoteric Shingon school of Buddhism. The temple, which dates back to 1128, is the headquarters for the Chizan sect of Shingon Buddhism.
