UDA will See dust in Mt. Kenya

Murang'a Governor Irungu Kang'ata's statement of 3rd May 2026 marks a pivotal moment in Kenya's pre-election landscape. In carefully measured language, he confirmed he will not defend his gubernatorial seat on UDA's ticket, a declaration that, however diplomatically packaged, delivers a serious blow to President Ruto's party in Mt Kenya.

Kang'ata is no ordinary defector. With a 68% approval rating, the highest among all 47 governors nationally, his departure strips UDA of its most credible face in the region. His framing of the split around principle rather than personality makes it harder for UDA to dismiss or discredit him. They will not manage to politically fight him.

Strategically, by pledging loyalty until 2027 while withholding his next party choice, Kang'ata retains maximum bargaining power. Every party, DCP, Jubilee, and others, must now court him on his terms. He will most likely get a direct nomination from the party he will choose!

For UDA, the message is unmistakable: Mt Kenya is slipping away for good. More governors will follow suit. Kang'ata recently met Wamatangi.
