The Northern Gate of Angkor Thom is one of the five grand entrances to the ancient walled city built by King Jayavarman VII in the late 12th century. It was designed both for defense and as a symbol of spiritual protection. The gate is crowned with a giant tower featuring four serene faces of Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara (Lokesvara), representing compassion and the all-seeing power of the king.
