How can such a majestic animal be shot and killed inside or near a protected area?
Where were the patrols? Where was the surveillance?
Who is being held accountable?
Department of Wildlife Conservation, Sri Lanka (DWC) has a legal and moral duty to protect Sri Lanka’s wildlife. With the millions generated annually through wildlife tourism, the public has a right to know how those funds are being used. We respectfully but firmly demand the following:
1. A full and transparent investigation into the death of Bathiya, with results made public and legal action taken against those responsible.
2. The immediate establishment of a permanent Anti-Poaching and Wildlife Crime Unit, supported by trained personnel and, where necessary, military or STF collaboration to ensure stronger field enforcement in and around national parks.
3. A public audit of wildlife tourism revenue and clear disclosure of how those funds are allocated. Particularly toward wildlife protection, ranger training, and park operations.
We love our wildlife, and we respect the law. But law without enforcement is meaningless. Let this not be another case that fades away.
This is not political. This is about protecting what is ours, what the world admires us for, and what future generations deserve to inherit.
We demand transparency. We demand accountability.
We demand justice for Bathiya.
