Since 2009, the Maldives has allowed guesthouses on local islands (before that, only resorts were allowed). These are your best options for budget travel.
Top budget-friendly local islands:
• Maafushi – Most popular backpacker island, lots of cheap guesthouses, cafes, and day trips.
• Thulusdhoo – Surfer vibe, local culture, good midrange options.
• Dhiffushi – Quiet, local, great snorkeling.
• Rasdhoo – Diving paradise with small guesthouses.
• Ukulhas / Thoddoo – Eco-friendly, clean, great beaches.
You can island-hop between some of these using local ferries or speedboats.

• Public ferries: Cheapest option ($2–5 USD), but limited schedules (no ferries on Fridays).
• Speedboats: $20–50 USD per trip, much faster.
• Domestic flights: For very remote islands, but expensive ($100+ one way). better you can use public ferries if you are expecting budget travel

• Hostels / dorms: Limited, but available on Maafushi and Thulusdhoo (~$20–30 USD/night).
• Couchsurfing: Possible, but rare.
🍲 Food
