Minneriya National Park
Minneriya National Park, located in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka, is renowned for its rich biodiversity and the incredible "Gathering" of elephants, which is one of the largest wild Asian elephant gatherings in the world. The park spans approximately 8,890 hectares and is centered around the ancient Minneriya Tank, built by King Mahasen in the 3rd century AD. The park's ecosystem includes a mix of evergreen forests, scrublands, and grasslands, providing a habitat for a variety of wildlife. In addition to elephants, visitors can spot leopards, sloth bears, sambar deer, and a wide range of bird species, making it a popular destination for wildlife enthusiasts and bird watchers. The park is especially vibrant during the dry season (June to September), when elephants migrate to the tank to bathe, drink, and socialize, offering a spectacular natural display. Minneriya National Park is not just a haven for wildlife but also a significant cultural and historical site, reflecting the ancient engineering marvels of Sri Lanka's past. It’s an essential visit for those looking to experience the natural and historical heritage of Sri Lanka.
