*Just some tips and advice to make planning your Sri Lanka trip easier.* 😊🇱🇰
One thing I’d say first is don’t try to see the whole island in one trip. Sri Lanka is small on the map, but travel times are longer than most people expect. You’ll enjoy your holiday much more by staying 2–3 nights in each place instead of changing hotels every day.
When planning your route, try to group places that are close together. A lot of people waste hours driving back and forth because they haven’t planned the route properly. A simple, well-planned itinerary will save you both time and money.
If it’s your first visit, I’d recommend including a nice mix of everything. Climb Sigiriya Rock or Pidurangala, spend some time in Kandy, enjoy the train journey through the hill country to Ella, do at least one wildlife safari, and then finish with a few relaxing beach days. Depending on the season, choose the south coast or the east coast rather than trying to fit both into one trip.
Don’t miss a safari if you enjoy wildlife. Every park is different, and every safari is unique. You might see elephants, leopards, sloth bears, crocodiles, buffalo, deer, peacocks and so many beautiful birds if you’re lucky.
Take the scenic train if it fits your itinerary, but don’t build your entire trip around it. Trains can get delayed, and tickets can sell out during busy periods, so always have a backup plan.
Try local food whenever you can. Don’t only eat at tourist restaurants. Small local cafés often serve some of the best rice and curry, kottu, hoppers and fresh seafood you’ll find.
For transport, buses and trains are great if you’re travelling on a tight budget and have plenty of time. Tuk-tuks are perfect for getting around towns. But if you’re here for 10–14 days and want to see more without the stress, I’d always recommend hiring a private car with a local driver. It gives you complete flexibility, saves a lot of travel time, and you can stop at viewpoints, waterfalls or local places whenever you like.
