Today, Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Wilton Simpson and the Florida Forest Service are reminding Floridians how they can help report suspicious fire activity in Florida’s wildlands and forests during Arson Awareness Week, May 3-9, 2026. Much of the state is under county-mandated burn bans as May begins, and the state has had a busy wildfire season with over 1,900 wildfires already recorded, burning almost 120,000 acres.

With the fires surrounding our area, we want to extend a hand to anyone needing help moving their livestock to safer ground. If you’re trying to evacuate animals and don’t have the means to transport them, we’re here and ready to help however we can.
We have livestock trailers and experience handling animals, and we’re willing to assist with transport to safer locations or evacuation zones.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you need help, or even if you’re unsure what your options are, we’ll figure it out together.
If you don’t need assistance but know someone who might, please share this post so we can reach as many people as possible.

Real talk…our hatch rates sucked.
Out of a dozen eggs, we had four fully hatch. Three more pipped but didn’t make it out of their shells. That’s always frustrating.
Was it possible the eggs were slightly too old when they hit the incubator? Right now, I honestly don’t know if it’s the age of the eggs causing these hatch rates… or the performance of the incubator itself.
That’s the hard part about juggling farm life, sometimes the eggs sit a little longer than they should. Viability starts dropping after about 7–10 days, and while we can push it, that doesn’t mean we always should.
It definitely has me evaluating everything.
Three pips that didn’t make it out has me questioning :
Was the humidity off?
How did we lose too much moisture?
So last night, we reset.
We placed another dozen eggs in the incubator. This is a test batch. Nothing older than eight days. This hatch is purely about evaluating egg dates versus incubator performance.
This time around we’re trying:
Five lavender
Five buff
Two “zombies” because if you know, you know.
My fingers are crossed.
We’ve actually been pretty happy with the VEVOR brand overall, and we’re looking at purchasing a VEVOR incubator. They have a larger cabinet-style incubator that’s on our radar once it comes back in stock. If we’re serious about focusing on hatching eggs and selling chicks this year, we need consistency.
Here’s the honest truth, with hatch rates like this, building a reliable chick program just isn’t going to happen.
I guess sometimes it’s fluffy lavender babies on Valentine’s Day.
And sometimes it’s just troubleshooting and tightening up your process.
This is the season we dial it in.
Track dates. Control variables. Adjust. Learn.
Homesteading isn’t about perfection.
It’s about paying attention.
