If you will ever come to Bhutan, and would want to see its culture to the fullest: visit Bumthang! This region, located in the center, has much to offer: rich history, many temples and monasteries, as long as amazing ecological food, clean air and friendly people ❤️

To preserve his teachings for future generations, Guru Rinpoche hid sacred treasures called Termas.

He prophesied that specific treasure-revealers, or Tertons, would discover them at the right time. When we travelled across Bhutan we learned the story of one of them: Pema Lingpa.

He was born in 1450 in the Bumthang Valley. His birth was accompanied by wonderful and auspicious signs. He grew up to fulfill the prophecy.

One of the most famous stories about Pema Lingpa is the miracle at the Burning Lake (Mebartso).

Pema Lingpa described a vision that others couldn’t see. He saw a magnificent golden castle beneath the water at the Lake (this is what we are trying to see on the photo, see if you can see the castle on the 2nd video of the post).

The people were skeptical. The water was deep and dangerous. To prove his faith and his vision, Pema Lingpa held a lit butter lamp high above his head and declared, “If I am a true revealer of treasures, I will return with the sacred text and this lamp will still be burning. If I am a fraud, I will perish in the water.”

With that, he leaped into the turbulent lake.
He entered through the open doorway of the shimmering golden castle he had seen. Inside, he was greeted by a wise and benevolent dakini, who presented him with the sacred Terma he was destined to find.

Pema Lingpa emerged from the water. In one hand, he held the precious Terma. In his other hand, held high for all to see, was the butter lamp - its flame still dancing brightly, proving that the power of his realization and the truth of his vision had protected him.

Second day in Bumthang, but seems like it’s been a week: we visited all the main temples and monasteries, hiked to Guru Rinpoche’s cave, tried Bumthang delicious foods at a local farm and had a picnic at a national park.

BHUTAN, BUMTHANG JOURNEY

Explore with us the spiritual heart of the Kingdom of happiness

Bhutan has a rich and unique cultural heritage that has largely remained intact because of its isolation from the rest of the world until the mid-20th century. The country is a sanctuary for Buddhism, where ancient monasteries and sacred sites harmoniously blend with breathtaking landscapes.

Begin your journey in Paro, where you’ll acclimate and relax after your arrival.
On the first day, explore historic sites such as Kyichu Monastery, one of Bhutan’s oldest and most sacred temples. The next day we will take a scenic flight to Bumthang, the spiritual heartland of Bhutan. Here, explore revered holy sites, including Kenchogsum Lhakhang, the Guru Padmasambhava Temple, Jambay Lhakhang, and Kurje Lhakhang.

Continuing our journey, venture to Trongsa, centrally located and home to the majestic Trongsa Dzong, the largest fortress in Bhutan that offers a glimpse into Bhutan’s royal history and provides breath-taking views of the surrounding mountains. Next, we will find the breathtaking Punakha Valley, renowned for the Punakha Dzong, a stunning fortress situated at the confluence of the Pho and Mo rivers. Enjoy a scenic riverside picnic, soaking in the tranquil beauty of the valley.

Drive to Thimphu, Bhutan’s vibrant capital. While in Thimphu, marvel at the towering Buddha Dordenma statue, explore Bhutan’s rich textile heritage at the Royal Textile Museum, and stroll through the bustling city markets for a taste of local life.

Return to Paro for the highlight of your trip a hike to the legendary Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Taktsang Monastery), perched dramatically on a cliffside overlooking the Paro Valley. This sacred site is one of Bhutan’s most iconic landmarks, offering both a spiritual and breathtakingly scenic experience.

This carefully crafted 8-day itinerary offers the perfect balance of cultural immersion, outdoor adventure, and relaxation, ensuring a truly enriching experience in the Land of the Thunder Dragon.
