Every corner of Oaxaca glows with memory this week. I’m grateful to witness how life and death meet here in beauty, love, remembrance, and raucous celebration. The scent of cempasúchil, music in the streets, the flicker of candles guiding loved ones home... it's a joy and an honor to get to be a part of all of it.

It's Guelaguetza week in Oaxaca. This festival is a time to celebrate the varied ethnic groups of Oaxaca state and their traditions. The delegations parade was crowded but lots of fun! Here are some highlights.

Another Magical Town to add to my list! Tlapujahua de Rayón in Michoacán state is a former mining town that's now known as the town of eternal Christmas. The town has many workshops where skilled artisans make hand-blown glass Christmas decorations. It's a nice time to visit if you're ready to get into the Christmas spirit! 🎄

In Angangueo, Michoacán, looking forward to visiting the El Rosario Monarch Butterfly Reserve! This is another picturesque "Pueblo Mágico," originally a mining town, now it's most well known as the gateway to the largest Monarch reserve. It's chilly, so if you come, pack a sweater!

I wonder if I'll ever stop adding to my list of favorite Mexican towns. Honestly, Valle de Bravo is so picturesque, so lovely, with its lake (Lago Avandaro, actually a reservoir created in the 1940s) in the center of town and traditional plaza. Just another one of those "Pueblos Mágicos" which is absolutely deserving of the title.

On a visit to Toluca (or just passing through, as I was on this occasion), take some time to visit the Cosmovitral. It's both a botanical garden and work of art in stained glass by the artist Leopoldo Flores (1934-2016) in a building that at one time housed the municipal market.

Hierve el Agua - in dry season vs. rainy season. I took the first photo in March, the second one this week (early July) after we've finally gotten some wonderful rain. It's beautiful any time of year, but I love seeing the green come out and everything so lush after it was dry for so long.
