🧡 I have a challenge for you today.
Let’s not just wear orange.
Let’s learn why.
is more than a shirt, a colour, or a hashtag. It represents children who were taken from their families, their homes, their languages and their cultures and sent to residential schools.
So today, use the resources we have.
Google “Residential Schools in Canada.”
Read a survivor’s story. Listen to the words of someone who lived it. And if you have children or grandchildren, share an age-appropriate story with them.
Let them learn from the people who experienced it—not just from a history book.
More than 150,000 First Nations, Inuit and Métis children attended residential schools, and the system caused profound and lasting harm to children, families and communities. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission gathered more than 6,500 survivor statements and documented this history so that Canadians could no longer say, we didn't know.
Let’s make sure the next generation knows.
Let our children understand how fortunate they are to attend schools today where they can learn, grow, express themselves, speak their language, celebrate who they are—and be encouraged to be who they are, rather than being told who they should not be.
And most importantly, let’s teach them that Every Child Matters.
Not just today.
Not just when we wear orange.
Every day. 🧡
