The Blue Marlin is a semi-submersible heavy-lift vessel built in 2000 by CSBC Corporation in Taiwan and operated by Dockwise. Measuring 224 meters long and 63 meters wide, it can carry cargo up to 76,000 tons. Its massive open deck allows it to transport oil rigs, warships, and other oversized structures globally. The vessel submerges to load cargo, then resurfaces to carry it across oceans.

⚖️ Ship Stability: The Science of Staying Upright

Ship stability is one of the most critical aspects of maritime safety. Understanding how a vessel maintains its upright position can mean the difference between safe operations and disaster.

🔵 Center of Buoyancy (B)
The geometric center of the underwater volume of the ship. This is where the total upward buoyant force acts. As the ship heels, B shifts toward the lower side.

🟠 Center of Gravity (G)
The point where the ship's entire weight is concentrated. This includes the vessel structure, cargo, fuel, water, and everything onboard. G remains relatively fixed unless cargo shifts.

📏 Metacentric Height (GM)
The vertical distance between G and M (the metacenter). GM is the key stability indicator:

✅ Positive GM (M above G) = Stable ship that returns upright after heeling
❌ Negative GM (G above M) = Unstable ship that will capsize
⚠️ Small GM = Tender ship with slow, uncomfortable rolling
⚠️ Large GM = Stiff ship with quick, violent rolling

Factors Affecting Stability:
🔸 Cargo loading and distribution
🔸 Free surface effect (liquid in partially filled tanks)
🔸 Icing on superstructure
🔸 Water ingress
🔸 Fuel and water consumption
🔸 Deck cargo and containers

Every vessel must have approved stability information onboard. Officers calculate GM before departure and monitor it throughout the voyage. Loading computers help optimize cargo distribution while maintaining adequate stability.

Poor stability has caused numerous maritime disasters. Regular stability assessments and proper loading procedures are mandatory under SOLAS.

At ShipSmith, we provide stability assessments, loading plan optimization, and inclining experiments to ensure your vessel operates safely.
