Concluding part

I started by developing a Strategic Business Plan for the company, Victorious Transport Management Services. While it was still in its embryonic form, the strategic business plan detailed the financial implications with graphical illustration, SWOT analysis ie the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats; Loan repayment plans, Projected daily income and other elements necessary for business survival in a dynamic environment. The plan also included:
Short term, mid term and Long term plans
After completing the 8-page plan, I shared the vision with two of my friends who are capable of financing the project.
What a brilliant job you have done,Victor. He nodded in affirmation to suggest his approval of the proposal. I thought he would just write a check of #650,000 and hand it over to me! But I was wrong.
“So it’s because you want to start driving taxi you wrote all these, na wa for you o,” the second guy said. He went ahead, “Is this how all micra drivers wrote a book before they started? He asked. “Anyway, it’s a good idea but you know how things are at the moment, I will join my faith with yours in prayers.” He concluded.
I left with mixed feelings of both disappointment and blessing. Disappointed because they both have the financial strength to do it and blessing because if it works, they would definitely want the glory ascribed to them.
So I sought financial assistance from my mum and siblings. I had #250,000 and needed additional #400,000. I called a family meeting where I shared the vision with those present. They were impressed and unanimously gave their approval. Few weeks later, the money was given to me in cash on my birthday 7th July, 2016, as a birthday gift.
The day was indeed one of the happiest day of my life. I had never handled such a huge sum of money in cash! I couldn’t sleep neither could I wait for the day to break. I was so security conscious that I didn’t allow a fly to come close to the bag. I slept with one eye closed and the other fixed on the bag by my bedside. I woke up at intermittently and counted the money to ensure nothing was missing.
The following day, 8th July, I bought the Nissan Micra car for the exact amount I had budgeted for it, took it to the then Resident Pastor, LFC Eleyele, Pastor Odunayo Emmanuel who anointed, prayed and dedicated it.
A week later, I got my licensed registration number KSH 470 XA, painted the car in Gov’t approved commercial color; white with green stripes and registered at Eleyele-Sango motor park where I ply till now.
On my first day at work as a taxi driver, I was nervous but not ashamed. I joined the queue at the garage and when it was my turn to “load” I “called”my passengers, “Sango…..Sango - barracks….Sango. After “picking” four passengers, I zoomed off. I repeated the same when I got to Sango and continued in that routine till 5pm when I closed for the day.
When I got home, I counted the money and it amounted to #7,300 even after deducting my expenses for the day which included cost of fuel, feeding, Union ticket and levies. I was super excited “So these guys make such amount of money everyday! No doubt they are richer than some civil servants and some bank officials. My respect for taxi drivers grew henceforth. I said to myself I have finally gotten my dream job!

Continuation…

When I got back to the office, I received the news that sent shocks down to my spine. I have been relieved of my duty as the Logistics Manager. What! How on earth could that be possible?. I asked the manager series of questions and the answers were “The directive came from above”, “Mr Victor I am so sorry it ended this way. I tried albeit unsuccessful to make him rescind his decision but you know Oga has the final say” something whispered to my ears saying “Mr man, your village people has finally gotten the better part of you”.
I went straight to my desk, packed my belongings said my final goodbye to a few of them and left. As I stepped out of the building, I made a vow never to work under a sole proprietorship.
I tried to secure a job with multinational companies such as Fan milk plc, Seven Up Bottling Company and some other ones but it wasn’t forthcoming. The waiting period wasn’t easy. I went through a lot couple with the harsh economic realities and the rising inflation. I was frustrated, depressed and psychologically devastated.
I needed a breakthrough, so I decided to make some researches on how I could succeed in my next line of action. Failure isn’t an option as I was determined to prosper in whatsoever my hand findeth to do. I began to look into the most profitable business venture with less capital. I had two different business options in mind; buy a micra car for taxi or open a business center.
To buy a foreign used (Tokunbo) micra car would cost between #600,000 to #700,000 and to establish a business center would cost more than a million naira.
“What should I do”, I said to myself. So I went into 3 days of prayer and fasting to seek the face of God and hear from him.
Following the leading of the Holy Spirit and due consultation with family and a friend, the former was considered the most viable.
Where am I going to get that huge sum of money? I pondered!!!!!!

Continuation

The sleep was interrupted at intervals. I slept on a plastic chair; it was dark, mosquitoes feasted on me, it was indeed the most miserable night I ever had. I couldn’t wait for the day to break and it looked as though the morning will never come!
I woke up with just #20 in my pocket. I thought for a while “this money would neither take me home nor to the office. After pondering for a while I felt it was better I go to the office as it was closer than Apete where I reside. I had no option than to trek as I couldn’t stand the shame associated with begging so I won’t be termed a “corporate begger”. I trekked from Yemetu to Idi-ape before I boarded a #20 taxi to the office.
I got there few minutes to 7and waited patiently for any member of staff to arrive. Upon their arrival, I borrowed money from one of them, called the manager to seek permission to go home so I can freshen up and come back later before I took my leave. He granted my request after I narrated my ordeal. He advised I take good care of myself before coming back.

My Journey into Taxi Driving

The journey started on the 8th of July 2016 after 6 months of thorough research into the business.
Having been in and out of job after my NYSC in 2009, I felt I was done with “white collar job” and the so called “yes sir” “yes sir”; “Oga said”, and the pressures and insults that characterized such jobs made me take the bold decision to resign from my last place of work, Melody Events; the event management company of Nigerian Breweries PLC, located opposite the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo state (BCOS) at Orita Bashorun, Ibadan.
I remembered vividly in June 2014, my Boss sent me to Lagos to bring some of the electronic devices shipped from abroad. I got to Lagos around 4:30pm. It was on a rainy day. The place was flooded couple with mad traffic synonymous to Lagos and also the sometimes unpleasant protocols at the airport. I was still there till 8pm. I called my boss and pleaded with him to allow me spend the night in Lagos and come back the next day but he vehemently refused. So I had no option but to leave Lagos that night. It was indeed a sad experience.
I got to the park 30mins later and was fortunate to be the last passenger. We left few minutes later. On our way back, we had a flat tyre somewhere close to Sagamu. It took us almost an hour to fix it before we continued our journey. We eventually got to Iwo road around 12:15am. I sent a text to my boss informing him that I just arrived. He called immediately and told me to meet him at a popular bar at Yemetu.
When I got there, I met him chilling with his friends, watching a World Cup match. So I greeted them thinking he was happy that I returned safely but to my amazement the next thing I heard was “ode gba key yi ko lo drop eru yen si inu motor” meaning “fooool take this key and drop the items in the car” I was shocked to my marrows! I felt the world should crumbled on me! I was in pains, my legs were shaking. I tried to mutter a word but my vocal failed me. Those words further sent cold into my body, pierced my soul and weakened my spirit. With all the traumatic and agonizing experience I had, this is what he had to say. Risked my life with goods worth over a million naira in my shuttle bag stack at my back. Also with the high crime rate especially at that unholy hour he couldn’t even say “Thank you”.
Surprisingly, he left me there stranded in the dead of the night, never bothered how I was supposed to get back home. No place to go, no one to come to my rescue. I had no option but to sleep at the bar……
