“How much is it?”

It sounds like a simple question. But a proper logistics quote starts with a few more questions.

What are you shipping?
Where is it coming from?
How much does it weigh?
What are the dimensions?
What shipping terms are you using?
Does it need special handling or haulage?

A company can spend millions purchasing heavy equipment overseas and still underestimate what it will take to get that equipment operational.

The purchase price is only the beginning.

Before approving that purchase, someone needs to be asking:

🔰What duties and statutory charges should we budget for?
🔰What type of truck or specialised haulage will be required?
🔰Can the machine be transported directly to our facility?

🔰 And most importantly, what is our expected landed cost before this asset starts working for the business?

For a high-value machine, these aren’t small details.

They can significantly affect the actual cost of the investment and they are much easier to plan for before the purchase is approved than after the machine has already shipped.

If your company imports heavy machinery or high-value equipment, logistics should be part of the procurement conversation from the beginning not something discussed after the supplier has shipped.

The right question isn’t only, How much does the machine cost?

It’s: How much will it cost us to have this machine here, cleared, delivered and ready to work?

And sometimes, the biggest surprise isn’t the duty.
It’s the charges that start adding up while your cargo is waiting.

That’s why, before you ask:
How much is the customs duty?
You should also ask: What is my estimated total landing cost?

That one question can help you budget properly, protect your expected profit and avoid those frustrating “Wait… why is the bill this much?” moments.

But I gave both agents the same documents. Why are their quotes so different?🤔

If you import, you’ve probably experienced this. You send the same invoice and shipping documents to two clearing agents, and suddenly you’re looking at two completely different figures.

And the first thing that comes to mind is, Who is trying to overcharge me?

But a different quote doesn’t automatically mean someone is overcharging you. One agent may have included charges the other hasn’t, or they may be using different estimates or professional fees.

So before choosing the cheaper quote, simply ask:

Please, can you break down what is included?

Because a ₦600,000 quote that leaves out charges you’ll later have to pay may not really be cheaper than a ₦750,000 quote that already covers them.

Don’t just compare the final figure. Compare what you’re actually getting for it.

Your cargo. Your money. You deserve to understand the numbers.
