Live transmission of results to INEC’s iRev portal alone will not end electoral manipulation in Nigeria. Politicians are often indifferent to what is uploaded on iRev, but what is ultimately declared at the end of the day. The real rigging workshop is the collation centre, where genuine results are altered or replaced.

Unfortunately, our judicial system puts so much burden of proof on a petitioner. Technicalities often override substantial justice. A minor technical error can invalidate an otherwise solid case, however compelling the evidence.

I propose that physical collation centres be replaced with “returning centre” model. Under this system, polling unit results would be drawn strictly from a secure virtual collation portal. The returning officer would simply declare the winner based on figures transparently aggregated from that portal, leaving no room for manual alteration during collation.
