TIME TO ENJOY FRESH TOMATO HARVEST.

Some years ago my friend Udofe Janet and I, started to run a market survey on the difference in price of fresh tomato in Nigeria at different time of the year. Consumers could enjoy fresh tomato at a favourable cost.
I find a write up that would interest you, just read.

Let me use this medium to remind our women and ...... that the price of fresh tomato is very low in the Nigerian market. This means that tomato is in season. A full basket which went for 8 to 10K in the last few months now goes for 3-4K.

In addition to enjoying the fresh tomatoes, you can turn them into various products, namely paste, puree, ketchup, juice etc just right inside your kitchen.
Since a lot of our women cook with tomato paste, let me briefly guide us on how to prepare tomato paste in your home.
1. Buy fully ripe and hard tomatoes. (do not use “awarawa”)
2. Buy some fresh shumbo or tatashi if you desire your paste to be very red in colour.
3. Wash with cold water and cut into pieces (2-4 slices)
4. Bring to boil. Do not add any water while cooking instead add salt.
5. Allow to cool, then sieve out the water (You can use the water to cook or discard it)
6. Grind to smooth consistency (Note! Do not grind before boiling)
7. Now do gravitational sieving to further eliminate water from the ground tomatoes and obtain harder paste. The gravitational sieving picture is shown here.
8. Put the paste into airtight containers if you do not have freezer. But if you have freezer just put the paste inside any container/cellophane and then store in the freezer. The tomato you process now can last till next 6-9 months. What are you waiting for?.

Remember various tomato paste in the market are mixed with orishirishi. Make one by yourself.

Note: If you don't have freezer you can use empty mayonnaise bottles, after feeling it with the tomatoes put water in a pot and boil then put your bottle tomatoes inside for like 10 minutes bring it down allow to cool then keep in ur kitchen shelves.

One Christmas just past and we had our Nigerian jollof rice made from different locally produced, processed and packaged rice.

If you think Nigeria is a good to sell rice for a growing population, why not come set up your production and processing farms here, with just a backward integration plan to off - take 60 - 70% of rice produced by local farmers in Abakaliki, Ebonyi state or waterside in Ogun state and Ofada. The Internal Generated Revenue of these area can grow fast, with more people been gainfully employed.

Let the people who consume the rice also spend the money.

THINK ABOUT THIS...........................................................

Always remember that in a “gold rush” the guys who make the money are not always the guys digging for gold, but the guys who supply shovels, blankets, and shoes for the diggers.

The boarder closure is bad news for some people, but good news to me. Yes me! Where are you in the chicken value chain? An investor, a producer(Poultry Farmer), a processor or finally you are a consumer.

WHAT IS THE ODDS, WHERE THERE IS A
"REWARD FOR PASSION"

With the rapid pace of growth of the use of drones, automated tractors, artificial intelligence, robotics and block chains, agriculture as we know today is changing.
Sadly, the average age of farmers in Africa( Nigeria) is 55 - 60 Years and by the year 2030 it will rise to between 75 - 80. However, by this same year 2030, Nigerian population has been projected to hit 300 million person. How do we feed them?

There is an urgent imperative to radically modify our education curriculum in many of our secondary schools, polytechnic and universities to embrace these trends and especially to focus on agribusiness entrepreneurship targeted at young people.

If we must really close the knowledge gap, we must talk less and begin to act fast. Today, young people graduating from high school (Secondary school) in Philippine plants a tree to form canopy in her immediate community, what a way to teach afforestation and reduce the effect of climate change without so much copy and paste from essential agriculture text books.

It is more likely that the future farmers will be sitting in their homes with computer applications using drones to determine the size of their farms, monitor and guide the application of farm inputs, and with driverless combine harvester bringing in the harvests. If we do not act fast it will be another history of how the Malaysians came to study our oil palm production and today we are playing catch up. How prepared are we as nation?

Do you want to put your brand on our next Young Agribusiness Club event? Or you want to sponsor one young farmer with as low as N1000?

WHO IS ALHAJI MOHAMMED SABO NANONO?

Meet the current minister of agriculture and rural development Alhaji Mohammed Sabo NANONO, 73 years was born April 11, 1946, has two(2) wives and a father of 8 children. A politician, industrious farmer, traditional ruler, an Harvard trained and was a former lecturer at the prestigious Ahmadu Bello University,Zaria where he graduated.

I an interview at the website of Agx Africa, NANONO said, " The economy is very complicated and also very resourceful, it is divided into 3 main areas, agriculture, agro - allied industry , and oil and gas. We need to look at the industries where the maximum impact can be created and give emphasis to the that area" . Agriculture is a critical sector in the Nigerian economy, if given the necessary attention, it would help solve many of the nations challenges.

We must bring to mind nations and visionary ministers who have turned the fortune of their nation with focused leadership as seen in Brazil, when it launched a scale up school nutrition program, under its ' Zero Hunger Program ' . We must commend the doggedness and determination of the minister Da Silver(Director General FAO). It was however, successful because, its then president Lula, grew up under hunger and decided that food must become a fundamental human right, enshrined in its constitution.

Let's come back home, our bow tie Dr Akinwunmi Adeshina had clarity of vision and was fast to communicate it at all platform, thereby changing the face of farming, rather it became more of a business and was a delight, role model and mentor to several youth. His success was a campaign focus for his party for a re - election bid and was also pivotal to his promotion as the president of Africa Development Bank.

So much is expected from NANONO going by the success of the his predecessors. The revolution in the banking sector, telecommunications and entertainment sector as brought by the direct involvement of young and vibrant youths. More actions and less of occasional lip service.
Hence, a renewed vision and vigour is required to drive the " Green Alternative Programs " which is necessary for Job creation, economic stability and prosperity for all Nigerian to feel its impact.

To this the spot light is on the Nigerian Agriculture as several other countries depends on its boom for her growth. The days are counting, the responsibility is on Alhaji Mohammed Sabo Nanono and his state counterpart Mustapha Shekuri to bring about zero hunger.

CHANNELING OUR STRENGTH TO GREATER VALUE

Do you know that by 2050, Africa population would be 9billion? Seventy percent of the current 1.7billion Africa population depends on agriculture for livelihood. Sixty - five percent of the uncultivated arable lands are in Africa and that seventy eight percent of world wide phosphate reserves are in Africa? How about I told you that fifty percent of African population are under 18 years old?(Coined from Austin Uzim)

The challenges facing Nigeria require focused and compassionate leadership. We owe it as a responsibility to ourselves, and for generations to come, to use every opportunity at our disposal to make the world a better place. If we must play as a nation, we must turn the minds and focus of young people across the states and local government to adding value to what is locally produce in abundance in each rural communities, then we can create employment, create wealth and improve the activities of our rural dwellers.

The secret of the wealth of nations is clear - rich nations process all of what they produce – whether in agriculture, minerals, oil and gas or services – while poor nations export their produce as raw materials. While demand for raw commodities is elastic, demand for processed and value-added commodities is relatively inelastic. The price of cotton may decline, but never the price of textile and garments. The price of cocoa may decline but never the price of chocolates. The price of coffee beans may decline but never the price of brewed specialty coffee at Starbucks.

We must sound it in the ears of critical stake holders in the Nigerian agriculture space.
We must not get used to abnormal things: Not to have food is abnormal. Not to have electricity is abnormal. A lack of universal health care is abnormal and a lack of social services is abnormal. The distorted lens of abnormality cannot and must not become the norm.

😨 ADD WASTE 😂 OR 😀 ADD VALUE 💰💰

Post-harvest losses (PHL) accounts for over 30 percent of global food losses, with Africa experiencing worst situations. Hence, innovative strategies need to be developed and adapted in our production, processing, value addition, storage and preservation processes in order to minimize incidences of post-harvest damages thereby enhancing food security, reducing hunger and poverty in the Sub-Saharan Africa.

In Nigeria, from the fruit market in mile 12 to zaki biam, down to iseyin and reaching ogoja its clear that one must no longer glory in the expands of cocoa farm that his father has if value is not added.

Africa accounts for 75% of the world's cocoa production, with 65% of this being produced in Cote d’Ivoire and Ghana, but the continent is a price taker and receives only 2% of the $100 billion annual revenues from chocolates globally. The reason is because Africa exports just raw cocoa beans.

This pattern is the same for other commodities in which Africa is a major producer. Africa produces 146 million tons out of the 268 million tons of cassava in the world – or 55%, 5.4 million tons of the 5.6 million tons of cowpeas globally – or 9.62 million out of the 28 million tons of millet globally – or 43% and 29 million tons of the 69 million tons of sorghum globally - or 42%.

But producing raw materials is not enough. It is time for Africa to move to the top of the global food value chains, through agro-industrialization and adding value to all of what it produces.

However, it has to be a collective approach mostly private sector driven involving farmers in collaboration with government and its institutions at all levels as well as professionals, we must channel the minds of our young people across the continent of Africa 🌍 to adding value, with access to the right financing, skills and retraining required for productivity.
